So the son in law to be been having problems with his Relay Van messing around, stop/start not working, engine light coming on ,no temp sensors working.Took it to the main dealer to get it looked at under warranty and turns out it's the wing mirror, apparently it has several sensors inside that communicate with the ECU. Now it was smashed by another van several weeks ago so the lad fitted an Ebay job for £50 but it looks like it doesn't have the electrics so Citron have quoted £800 + labour to fit an new mirror. Quick look on ebay and a PAIR of OEM mirrors inc electrics new are £250!!! He's told them where they can shove their mirror.

Sounds like a money making scam by car manufacturers! Why would a mirror be connected to a ECU? French vehicles are one of the worst for electrical problems.

I haven't a clue, but could it be some form of cut out to prevent you driving with folded mirrors?

There is a temp sensor in the mirror and as wit5h most modern vehicles if they don't get the info they are expecting things don't work properly.

No temp sensor and no dpf regen and you could be in for a new dpf and that will cost you more than 800 quid.

True!

Wing mirrors now have lane assistance , temp sensors , heated mirror, electric motors for mirror , aerials , power fold , get home safe lighting.

That is SO true!
I bet it’s still going and would have cost much less over the years.

:good:

Mind you, one had to tack up Lynmouth Hill and you wouldn't be allowed to get away with that in today's traffic. The few other drivers knew what you were doing and would give way, laugh and wave. Porlock was out of the question.

Near enough every car in the last 15 years will have electronics of some sort within the wing mirror housing. Some are simple like mechanisms to enable the mirror glass to be moved via a switch inside the car but some are a lot more complicated. The mirrors on mine for example have indicating lights, temperature sensors, glass mechs, heating elements, puddle lights, wading depth sensors, blind spot monitoring sensors and displays, auto folding mechanisms. All of these systems will communicate with the ECU to detect faults and relay information to the screen and onboard systems.

Most main dealers will want a minimum of £180 just to get the car in the workshop before any actual work has taken place. It's not all greed either, they'll have some pretty horrendous manufacturer franchising fees, software and licensing costs, manufacturer training costs on top the usual overheads and costs.

Your average back street garage or even specialists won't have these associated costs as they'll probably be ex-manufacturer trained, have lesser and more common fault finding hardware and software and not have to pay any costs to be associated with a particular brand or be limited in where they can source parts.

Looking back at the service history for my Land Rover and a basic service (oil, filters and checks) from a Land Rover main dealer set the last owner back the best part of £800 for probably a half days work. The same service this year at an Independent Land Rover specialist was just over £450 using OEM parts and fluids with the online service history also updated. A non Land Rover affiliated specialist probably would have been even cheaper.
