Shin of beef stew

Still got some shin of beef left, so thought "what about a stew ?" 🤔

So, a few chopped small potatoes, sprouts [yup😆], a leek, 2 small diced carrots, chopped green beans, chopped button mushrooms, a shallot and red wine concoction started it all off,,,, stock cubes and gravy granules, seasoning, lid on and relax 🙂

Nice and easy to bung everything in a large pan, and an hour and a half later,,,, SERVICE !!! 😋 😃

The stew look fine , I would willingly eat a bowl of that , my grandparents used to do a lot of stew including Rabbit , on the top of the saucepan they would steam a couple of suet dumplings , any dumplings ever left over would be eaten cold sliced in half with a nice knob of butter , simple but very effective .    MM

Proper grub that. 👍

Thanks guys 🙂 TBH, it was a bit over-stewed and it became almost a soup 😆 Didn't mind, because I've had lots of big dinners recently, it made a nice change 😀

Is that personal thing only beef and tomato make good bedfellows.

Tomato seems to be the 'go to' ingredient in a lot of things, just don't think it belongs in a stew. Will have a rummage through the cupboards to see what might be suitable to lift the leftover leftovers 😆😂

Deffo gives depth of flavour, if it's texture that's the problem you can actually get tomato powder and puree adds a salt like taste. But you can put just about anything in a stew.

I like tomato - and indeed do use it as a 'goto', both from tins and from puree.

Mushrooms are good.  I use fresh, tinned if no fresh to hand (keep a couple of tins handy) and I have some dried to try, but not used them yet.  You can also get a frozed bag of ready chopped 'fajita mix' - which has onion, mild peppers etc in it.  https://www.trolley.co.uk/product/ocado-frozen-fajita-mix/GGL009

Thanks for the suggestion John, but prefer my stews a bit more 'traditional' 👍

In this stew are,,,, salt and black pepper, dried mixed herbs, 2 beef oxo cubes + some granules to slightly thicken, Worcestershire sauce, a glug of red wine, plus all as in the OP. Perhaps a diced onion instead of shallot would have been better. Don't get me wrong,,,, it was nice, just not very nice. Just me being fussy I suppose 😆
