myuserid
By the looks of things a few of you wouldn’t last 2 minutes, honestly if you went out there and told them to f off you will probably wake op in hospital with a .22 lodged in your scull! I've been told many times never intervene, you see it on the news all the time, I dont want to be a statistic. Although if they ended up outside my front door they probably have a double barrel in-between their eyes.
myuserid
And by the way the police do know, they were told this afternoon once the damage was assessed, they still have shown up, so whats the point anyway?

JohnGalway
Been giving this a bit of thought. I agree with MyUserID not reporting it if it would be obvious he had been the one to call the cops. Especially living alone, I'm not talking about being in any physical danger but say you're out at work, on an errand or socialising away from your house, things can happen. Things that can ruin lives or cost an awful lot of money to repair or replace, if they're replaceable. I'll admit my initial reaction was yes he should've called the cops at the very least, and bad neighbour etc did cross my mind. But, sometimes first reactions aren't the best ways to go. If there's a problem with lead etc being stolen then the property owner should have had the appropriate systems installed, not much point in bolting the stable door after the horse has legged it is there? sidibear
An ALARM MINE, got to get me one of those! I have one on my garage door, at a "suitable height so they can hear it" when it goes off. Just have to be careful when I open the door

al4x
The problem you have is by not reporting it they will just keep coming back. Ok they will know its you but what happens when they do the same to a little old lady and she confronts them. The police are used to dealing with people like it and in reality they do threaten them quite well and lets face it these types usually threaten revenge but rarely do anything about it as the police will be straight round for them. If they are that open that they couldn't care less if you heard then I'd expect them back for more and more until you either do something or they run out of stuff to steal. roadkill
i take it this happened on your farm Is it against the law to go out there with your shot gun and let off a coulple of warning shots ?? I know of a local poacher who once had a double barrell put to his head by the farmer and told to clear off

Highlander
I'm in the middle of the countryside, no houses anywhere near me on my own for the next few weeks. Just me and a chicken farm full of small chic’s, so it would be obvious that I had called the police. I sat tight as Tony said as there have been a few nasty encounters with knives around this area. Seems to me the farm is full of chickens and no MAN about the place...you let them get away with it! You deserve to be ripped off some more! Unless you stand up to be counted the perps just keep getting away with things and then they'll escalate their crimes! Next time they'll no doubt be emboldend enough to break into your house, lets hope you're out at the time otherwise you'll be in for a hiding! Guest The Outlaw
A bit harsh Highlander, I wouldnt go outside in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere and tackle a gang of whoevers if I was on my own and risk getting stabbed or worse. For the cost of the lead alone it isnt worth it. How many blokes not knowing what they were armed with would you take on in one go? Bearing in mind they are equipped for stripping lead they wont be carrying feather dusters. He assesed the situation and acted accordingly imo he did the right thing. He is going to step up security, that alone is a good move. Tony
al4x
He wouldn't have needed to deal with it thats what the police are there for. By doing nothing I guess he would have seemed asleep. The best option is get some signs made up saying the premesis is covered by a monitored alarm that way it will look like the alarm called the police so will keep things from being personal. That's a good idea Plenty of Rambos in this thread, easy to say when you're not faced with the situation. Easy to loose your guns and freedom too. The law is certainly not on MY side over here and I'd be confident it wouldn't be over there in the UK either.
Guest The Outlaw
and also Tony
al4x
the law is pretty simple over here with regard to using your guns and self defence. You just don't use them except in extreme circumstances and you need to make damned sure it doesn't look pre meditated. However had the poster been out lamping on the farm he would have reason to be carrying a gun and were he then to get attacked he would stand a very good chance of getting away with defending himself. I hate with a passion the Tony Martin argument as he had an illegal firearm having had his licence revoked and proceeded to almost lie in wait for burglars and then shoot them while they weren't a threat and were running away. Had he had a legal gun and had defended himself I believe he would have got away with it
Highlander
He didn't even phone the police. What if the situation escalated and he'd heard a cry for help from a woman/young girl or someone being mugged etc? Would he have still put his head under the covers and pretended to be asleep...totally useless wimp IMO. I also believe the law's been changed to allow 'reasonable force' in stopping crimes on property.
Guest The Outlaw
I'm not getting into an argument over someone else but you seem to keen to judge him on a situation that only he had full appreciation of. I believe he would have acted differently if the scenario of the old lady young girl being mugged, but they werent, so he didnt. Yawn Tony
