lurcherboy
Defender 90 TD5. £20 of squirt can be pushed to 120 miles if you drive like a grandad but absolutely **** off road due to the boots and Land Rovers brainwave of fitting anti-roll bars I sold my 200TDi to YP and still regret it. 3" suspension lift and that went anywhere I pointed it and unlike everyone elses vehicles on this site, it WOULD get stuck when run through the real offroad outings. 3 foot of mud has a tendency to slow one down a bit but that just adds to the fun and you then get to deploy the winch LB

Pirate
Pajero 2.8 Auto inter cooler for me: Go anywhere, cheap to buy, good on the tarmac, and lots for your money. MPG is around 25-30, short wheelbase for agility, long wheelbase for loads. I've had 2, and both, super reliable. Pirate:

Bloody Yank
Those sure are some cute little trucks you got over there! I bet my new Duramax would get some odd looks, 6.6L turbodiesel around 7000LBS gets around 19mpg on the highway. Damn its nice being a superpower with cheap fuel......... Wookie
My W plate Frontera 2.2 DTi does 37 mpg (calculated tank to tank mileage) and is comfy as anything. I've only had it off road twice or so, but it's very good. If I was serious about taking into the mud, I'd put proper tyres on it and get the 3" lift kit. My car p.s. I don't bash my knees on the dash of the Frontera like I do _every_ time I get into a Landy wither Edited January 16, 2008 by Wookie
dunganick
dread to see it get to the top of a steep incline Not to mention try to go around one of our round abouts.
Baldrick
I get 30mpg from my '02 Td5 Disco on a steady motorway run at circa 65mph. Most of the time I get about 28mpg.
Andy75
Mostly used Fronteras for off-road work, my latest being a W reg 3.2 V6, which is a complete beast. Returns average of 23mpg according to the on-board 'puter. That's my daily driver now really as I don't want to bash her when green laning, so have just bought the best instead for off road work and shooting wagon : Suzuki SJ 410. Vegeta
So it looks like the Frontera is a contender for me. I have heard some good reports here about it but no bad so is there anything that goes on them or what should i look out for if getting one? Wookie
Frontera 2s have a nice little dash fault that can sometimes stop the rev counter/speedo working, but there's an easy workaround for it. Other than that, the only other thing I can think of that is a bit of a nightmare is replacing the injector leak-off pipes on the DTi version. When I did mine, it took me a couple of hours, but only cost about a fiver in bits (instead of a lot more for the Vx kit). The best advice I can give is to trot over to http://fronteraowners.co.uk/ and ask about. Seriously though, I think the Fronty is a very good car for the money you pay for them. chunk
Disco 200tdi, well cheap now. I dont do much mileage, work is only 1.5 miles away, so i dont worry too much about mpg, but stick a fair bit of veg oil in anyway. Had a long run to Lincolnshire and back in a day recently and it was faultless; 70 on dual cabbageways, and 80 on motorways. It supposedly does around 30mpg but i havent bothered to measure it, but the 450 or so run didnt rupture my wallet. Used to run a vitara, but only at the farm, so it was cheap to run with only the odd jerrycan of petrol in it. Seemed reasonably competent off road, and was used to shift pigeon gear about and for lamping. The disco is great off road, for lamping, no vibes when resting on the mirror. Good family vehicle and it will carry mountain bikes , fishing gear and kayaks easily.

Andy75
Anyone have one of these? "VAUXHALL FRONTERA SPORT S TD" Can you say what sort of MPG you get or can expect from it? Pushkin Depending on age, its most likely a 2.8 TDi, which is the Isuzu engined version. Very sought after, and should return 28 to 34 ish depending on (ab)use. If its the 2.5TD, expect similar mileage, more power, but more problems (VM engine).

bobt
I have a 200 tdi disco, it cost me £650, (yes) I bolted on bigger tyres and a winch I had, it does about 30 mpg 50/50 chip fat/derv. on our shoot it is the only vehicle that can get to all the shoot, even the all singing all dancing jap stuff on similar tyres struggle. I use a car for day to day stuff that does 55-60mpg a set of pads are £10, jap ones are £50-60? oil filters £4 jap ones £30+
darebear
with the majority of these 4x4's, you'll get reasonable mpg if you drive them sensibly. scaffy ALWAYS gets better mpg than me, whether it be the truck or the car. however..... if he bought me the gas_guzzling_american_import i wanted in the first place, i might consider driving more sensibly
