Paul in North Lincs.
I know these are not sporting picutes...but I couldnt post any photos in General Banter...so perhaps the mods may move this... Im Gutted... I breed and fly pigeons, and allocated my first round of youngsters to the race team......I've kept pure white homers for years..........and really wanted to try and have a crack at racing this year. Unfortunately 18 YB's and 3 feeders were killed yesturday by a mystery predator that ripped the lot apart........... I am guessing a mink, but cannot be sure....there were no visble signs of entry..and this happend during yesturday morning...... and hour after I'd fed them....in broad daylight I am not a hppy man

Teal
That is a really tough break Paul, sorry that it happened. Mink can climb pretty well, perhaps there is a hole in the wire higher up? Get it trapped anyway, and I hope you will get some replacement pigeons in the future. Paul in North Lincs.
thanks ...you mayb able to see a scratchin at the back of teh run where the birds are......I think he dug in there..... lucking I ha s another 25 pairs in stock, but still a gripper all the same.... Im assuing he'll be back with the cracases being left near the whole...so I've left teh crime scene untouched and put a raccon cage trap nearby.. revenge will be sweet

Paul in North Lincs.
Also seen rats do this I did think Rat...then wondered how a rat could kill 21 strong flying pigeons in daylight......in a 10 x 10x 7 flight and loft with v- perches I couls understand it if they were in boxes at night whilst dormant and sleeping....but a flying pigeon with pleanty of space takes some catching.... Its really got me stumped
wildoliver
Wouldn't put it past a cat either.
Evil Elvis
good luck in shooting the ******!!! There have been several avaries wiped out around here by rats.
Cranfield
Rats are very unlikely to kill in broad daylight near activity. Whereas mink will kill as you stand and look at them.
Ferretboy111
Crickey, what a nasty critter. I bet its a ferret or a mink. Cant see a cat shredding the pigeons to bits, Alex

Its really got me stumped Paul I was wondering about the space and the time aspect of what happened. There is no doubt that it would be possible for a mink to get a few, as they had just been fed and were perhaps still on the ground feeding. But 21 in a short space of time? Of course it may have been more than one mink but as mink have the same breeding patten as ferrets they would not be in a family group at this time of year so the maximum would be two. From your pictures Paul I can see that there are three whole birds and what seems the remains of two, were the other birds in seperate sheds? Sten Ch
I don't think it is mink. My bet is pine marten - at least it would have been over here in Sweden. They live everywhere, even inside villages where they nest under roofs, in attics and garden sheds. I had to catch one a few months ago which had taken up headquarters in my niece's house. Are they very common in England too? If they are, I'm sure it is a marten. Set up a trap and tell us what you catch! DanM
More than likely it was a cat, if it could get in. Maybe even a stoat.

TC That was just the outdoor flight....................there is a 4ft x 32 foot openining that leads into a large section with v- perches where they are locked up at night.......the rest were in there.... whatever was in didnt mess about................there are feet...heads and wings everywhere.... not randon patterns...soem the backs were eaten out...others the crops...and some just the head..... set the racoon trap...baited with one of the pigeon....needless to say it didnt
