Pigeons....

After my out of the blue phonecall, I tried to get Lucky Jim and some others out to cover the other fields but to no avail, everyone was working and I was coming off nightshift so I couldn`t get there before 8-30.

In the end I was set up for 9am and there was 4-500 on the field which flew off into the woods 2-300 yds away  anyway I didn`t use a hide as the area I had in mind to decoy the birds into had a low dry stone dyke and when sat in amongst the grass and dead stalks I was well cammoed and had a slight rise in front and the wind was behind me.

I set the deeks in 2 comma shapes with 10yds between them and the whirly between me and the RH deeks.

It took all of 5 minutes for the first birds to come in and there was about 20 all with wings well curved and dropping in from 100+ yds up !! and they were motoring, well thats my excuse for punching holes in fresh air with my cartridges ;)

The woods erupted and there was about 6-800 birds all over the place and after a couple of minutes of wheeling about and some departing the next few came in and the result was the same :birthday:

Anyhooo it took 9 shots before I got the pace of the birds and I got a L&R  The next hour was exciting with hits and misses and I had 16 down, then it slowed a bit until the sun started to creep out from the clouds.

Next hour saw another 9 and it went downhill, as I expected, again as there are too many fields to cover. There are 3 within 1/2 mile and 3/4 mile away another 3 :hmm:

Still I ended at 1-30ish with 35 for 96 shots with 4 L&R`s so I am a happy bunny and as I have a 3/4 full freezer and I`m off stalking tomorrow(hopefully!) I took them to the dealers and they were paying 25p a bird which isn`t too bad as they were a bit on the thin side as opposed to a week or two ago when they were as fat as butter.

I hoped to be back on Friday but it seems that it is heavy rain then, so I will be back on Thursday

Photos of bag & the field(second field behind pines with gas gun !).

:birthday: alright you are rapidly slipping into the same catagory as Stuartp and LB on the liking scale. ;)

I am sitting in yet another snow storm which should last into tommorrow morning. I have been through my ice fishing tackle....hoping to hit a really good blue gill lake this week....., my spinning tackle....... as open water is available in the river, and my fly box....need to tie a few McGuinties.... and you are out bashing woodies while the other two are out ferreting nasty

Well done H hope the stalking works out in your favour

You seem to shoot all the ones with weird beaks! 35 for 96 isn't that bad. Makes a change from all the cowboys on here who shoot 22 for "22 and a half shots" :birthday:

If you are reffering to me that is a low ratio even Hd would say he shot badly and ive done it myself ;)

But will and often do drop atleast 50 % as a few of here will tell you

Was watch SS from my hide 2 fields away, it was funny seeing the Birds drop then hearing the shot.

He done me by one bird. I had 33 for 95 carts, but i did start 2 hours after

and there were at least 6 birds i didn't go to pick from the wood to my left, as last time i shot there i went to pick birds that reached the wood only to find no birds which SS then spotted the following day still hanging in the trees.

anyways well done

PELTMAN
