CLOSE CALL

7am this morning, a call in from, well the chickens this time, of a fox attacking a pen outside my house.

Took me 5 minutes to wake up and understand what the noise meant as I have heard it before. Look out the curtains, fox! grab the safe keys, open the safe, araghhh what gun.. my eyes dart over 4 choices, and I grab the .222, load the bolt, 3 rounds into the mag, scope set to 8X, mod screwed on quickly (before loading), bolt closed, safety on, door open, and the fox sees me and takes off full steam for the woods. I manage to take two running shots safely with a slanting hill backstop and proceed to miss both.

Come one! wake up! last shot in the mag (only take 3) bolt closed, fox now reaching 100m distance, my last chance of a safe shot. Bring the rifle up, and 8'' infront of the fox and pull. Down he tumbles and rolls some due to the speed he was pelting along at.

My first of 18 foxes to be shot without a head shot and requiring so many shots  but the job is done, and I think within 5 minutes he would have broken the cage, and slaughtered the chickens inside, as he has attempted to do before, and managed ;)

Whopping great fox that took 10 minutes to bury! and is now laying at rest next to one of my mums prized white chickens which I buried a few months back, and this fox ripped its back and I had to put it down, and get it buried before mum got back from work :yp:

Feeling slightly chuffed, my first shots in well over 2 months on an oiled barrel, sleepy head, at 7am in the morning :D

Needless to say the chickens will benifit from it more then me.

Quite a nice looking dog fox actually.

If I was any good at maths, I would tell you how many inches that is at 100m through a 8X mag. But I will get a headache converting all that  Its not that much.

When you consider the bullet is there almost instantly at 100m, its not the speed of the bullet I needed lead for, its the speed of the fox, and the time it takes to pull the trigger when ready to fire.

Im sitting here still smiling about that shot, and im just glad I am not out there tidying up feathers and flesh right now :yp: been there done that, its not nice seeing 30 chickens 'spread' accross the pen. ;) This pen only has 3 chickens, so I would say it was worth £3 worth of ammunition  We get fantastic big eggs everyday, and most likely, good meat at some stage. They get fed waste food reducing waste, and being green and all that. Better then a compost heap.. :D

Thanks chaps

Yup everyday its a bit of a worry when the next fox will attack :good: They always come who you a most unprepared or least expecting to see one. This is certainly not the first time I have had to dash to the gun cupboard, and wont be the last  But its not often I actually get the opportunity to take a safe shot.

Cheers

Its pretty much a bog standard Tikka T3 with a T8 and AGS Swat scope, plus a Harris BP.

.222 cal. Really nice shooting gun. No problems with it at all, but then again I keep it super clean, the bolt is kept cleaner then the cuttlery on our dinner table
