I had a chance last year to get my hands on the Tayside Laser system last year.

I got a parked car moving at 5mph.

I was working with lasers last year on a project, and they are so dodgy for getting a true reading that I am constantly amazed that they are allowed to use them.

Even small things like a gust of wind that moves the camera, or even a change in the moisture content of the air that the laser travel through is enough to give dodgy results.

Yes they are accurate, but only in a fixed position and under ideal conditions.

Firing through glass or rain ******* up the readings no end, usually over read if I remember rightly.

Yes not sure how he managed it, must of been short on collers that day, I cant even keep my rifle steady aiming at 400 yards I must have gone past the opening in his window before he pulled the trigger, I certainly wouldn't have been where he was able to point unless he got me through his windscreen, and if his driver had a big nose he would have had even less of a view.

What youneed is some sort of black box device fitted to your car that reportes the last ten minutes worth of GPS data and speed. That way, if you did get caught, you could either wipe it or submit it as evidence that the speed they got was rubbish.

Personally, I don't speed. It costs too much in fuel and you rarely get there quicker. Plus, my car doesn't like going faster than 65 and I like having a clean driving license.

I can understand police being more amiable with speeders on motorways when roads are clear, later at night for instance, perhaps some kind of time related variance on limits?

Speeding in 40,30,20mph zones should be treated harshly, most people wouldnt do it around there own homes, where there own kids play, nimby is the phrase --- not in my back yard.

Would you gamble and shoot on another permission with a closed cert?, would you gamble with a fox on a brow of a hill?, why is driving a car any different?.

If caught, well .... if you play percentages, you must take it on the chin. bad luck matey!

Speed Kills don't you know!!!

Harry

does it? or is it yet another urban myth supported by the revenue takers oops sorry public servants who's duty it is supposed to be to protect the public rather than harris them (ask any striking miner?)

speeding in itself isn’t dangerous. Inappropriate use of speed for the given conditions is dangerous.

ask Med Hughes you know the chief constable for south Yorks, if he believed speeding kills? when he got done for doing 90 in a 60 zone!!

cheers KW

How the hell is firing a rifle into the unknown the same as doing 35mph in a 30 limit?

contender for most ridiculous statement of the week

there is an element of point the faster you go in a 30 the more risk you're taking of hitting a child or pet that runs out, might not happen but same as the rifle round it might not hit anyone.

Personally i hate speeding in 30's having lived in a few where it was dangerous to back out of your drive or even in one house walk out of the front door. Its often the older generation as well seem oblivious to doing 40 in a 30 then carry it on into the national speed limit. Really bugs the hell out of me having an old codger in his micra tailgating me in a 30 when I'm obeying it then to see him fall back and out of sight once the limit is 60

Become a "sleeping partner", but do it with one eye open..........from Cornwall.

Love to but the lad is only 20 this year,

I have seen lots of fatal and serious accidents where the main cause was excess speed.

Seen it with my own eyes.

So yes, speed kills (as does lots of other things).

Harry

Pro laser ii

Dirty Harry I agree with you,ref my eldest. bless him. but for some people who like me have held a clean driving license for over 27 years to then be nicked by a device proven to be inaccurate if used incorrectly is wrong and should at least have the statements of credible scientists listened to. all about money not road safety. thats my view anyway. Keep up the good work.

Speed tends to make the injury a tad more serious in any accident, HOWEVER exceeding the speed limit accounts for only 2% of all accident statistics? who says so actually the govt, you know the ones who use the police to collect yet another stealth tax using the guise of "safety" if the govt and the police actually believed the hype and really wanted to reduce speed, sleeping policemen or other measures of actually reducing speed would be taken, however fact is they DO NOT want speed reduced they want MORE caught ie revenue intake, not intending to seem harsh but thats my take on it,

anyway have a look at this long read very interesting? but if you want just look at stats, section 2.5 says it all.

Kdubya,

I dont really want to get into an argument about this because it will go on forever and as usual everyone will think they are right and we will be no further forward.

But....

Driver 17-19 Driver 17-25 Driver 26+

1, Loss of control 19% 14% 6%

2, Careless, reckless or in a hurry 14% 12% 7%

3, Travelling too fast for the conditions 14% 11% 5%

4, Slippery road (due to weather) 12% 10% 5%

5, Exceeded the speed limit 8% 6% 2%

6, Impaired by alcohol 4% 5% 2%

7, Aggressive driving 4% 4% 1%

1= most people loose control because of harsh steering, braking, acceleration or going into things to fast.

2= driving to fast would form part of the offence of due care/careless driving.

3= that will be driving to fast then

4= slippery roads are rarley dangerous unless the elements in 1 are present. Drive slowly and you should not loose traction but accepted you may drive from a good road into a slippy bit.

5= unsurprisingly low because 33 in a 30 on a straight bit of road with none of the other factors present is unikley to kill.

6= drink drivers loose control, judgement and often drive to fast for their impaired ability.

7= agressive driving I would describe as tailgaiting, undertaking, speeding and driving like a bit of a ******.

I was talking from first hand experience. I was not ********ting and I am not trying to justify Government policy but those stats all have an element of speeding or excessive speed for conditions.

If you all had a Landie like me you wouldn't get a speeding tickets

If you do a search there is a device that totally screws any laser device for 7 seconds. As it's illegal to use I won't help anyone find it but it isn't illegal to buy one.

Harry can I come to your party?

Harry not at all after an arguement (honest) just find the speeding thing a bit er how shall we say disshonest? I was done a few years ago, doing a stupid speed ( was done at 105mph) not trying to justify it I WAS WRONG! middle of june 0430 am

not another car on road (or so I thought) A19 big straight dual carriage way with nowt but open fields either side so WHAT harm? answer NONE! not as if I was going mental past a school at chucking out time,

well gets pulled ( radar jobbie) copper says got you, reads me my rights, suggests I see a solicitor, says in your favour I will say I did not consider your driving unsafe , the road conditions where good, and you reacted very well to seing me ( but to late I had you)

gets intention to prosecute statement from cop says I noticed a white car traveling at an obviously high speed OVERTAKING

another car (lying ****) anyway pointless arguing as a I knew it would be fruitless? goes to court.

This is AFTER filling in a ******* means test!!! result £500 fine and 6 points

so what does this mean? simple it aint about road safety its about ABILTY to PAY nothing more nothing less

I feel sorry for the coppers of today they are pawns of a corrupt govt hell bent on raising revenue be it fair or foul.

like I said id bobbies or govt wanted to reduce speed they would build in methods of reduction.rather than camera's

cheers KW

I understand the whole means test thing and it ****** me off to.

If you had gone to court and had a string of previous convictions, were claiming benefits and lived in a council house and had 6 children by 7 women they would probably have paid your expenses.

However good hardworking members of the public get hammered because they can afford it.

Don't seem right but thats the courts for you.

It's the same for all offences criminal or otherwise where a fine is involved.

I had a hard working type bloke assault me and he was fined £500 but when a vagrant type does it they may get £10 if your lucky.

They will say that there is no chance of them paying a £500 fine and it's a waste of time giving a fine that big.

As an officer stopping people at the roadside I don't really care if you can afford the fine for the fixed penalty i'll issue it anyway. If they are not happy then it will go to court. This may sound harsh but I have heard almost every excuse under the sun, had the tears and everything.

I have had Doctors speeding (on the way to opperate on a sick child) who then produced false insurance. That one got struck off by the GMC when at the hearing it came to light he was on the way home from work and there was no sick child (even though he phoned the hospital from the police car to explain why he was late).

He got a massive fine at court as a result of the means test!

I could ramble on for hours but one last thing.

I understand you accept you were in the wrong for your speeding offence and am not having a go but this may make you think about why the limit is there.

A few years ago I saw some photos of the remains of a chap who had an accident in the dark on the motorway. He was ok but a bit shaken and confused when he got out of the car. He then climbed the central reservation thinking it was the hard shoulder and walked into the path of an oncomming vehicle. There was not much left of the poor chap by the time the morotway had been closed.

Going a bit slower gives you a bit more time to react incase the unexpected happens.

It may save your life or that of others and that can only be a good thing.

And if everyone went a bit slower, put their phones down when driving and put their seatbelts on it would save the taxpayer a lot of money in dealing with accidents and cost parliment a **** load in lost income.

You have got to admit though speed may kill but it also raises a shed load of cash for Gordon.

When I was at school we were taught the green cross code. Stop look listen. Not just run out it will be the drivers fault if they hit you.
