starlight32
We have a broad base of people on here who work in varied occupations as well as owning their own businesses. Do you think we Brits work too many hours? The reason I mention this is because I have two German engineers over here at the moment commisioning some equipment. I need them to work on tonite to finish a job and they politely told me they could not as they had already worked 8 hours. For them to work on they would have to ring their office in Germany to seek permission to do so. I think someone has it right, my shift is 13 hour nights plus handover- I'm beginning to think it is us who have got it wrong. Agreed? Well they phoned their office and got hold of someone, they had to speak to someone else and the upshot was that unless it was life or death situation they could not work on. They also reminded me that if permission was granted they would require a taxi or lift back to the hotel as it would be considered by their employment laws as 'unsafe to drive' after being at work for 12 hours. I have done 31 shifts on the belt of 13 hours and think nothing of it, cos we know no different. Edited April 4, 2008 by starlight32

chunk
My fishing mate has a farm and works a lot of hours. In some ways i envy him his lifestyle. Loads of shooting land, the dairy is right near his house, hard graft in fresh air but he rarely has time to do much. If i come up to do some shooting he can rarely spare the time to join me. Another farmer i know well, i`ve said come along and have a few hours over deeks, i`ll set up just turn up with your gun. He just says he hasnt the time and appreciates the efforts i go too. What you see aint always what you get unfortunately.

Chard
This ******** cloth cap sheeeyte about manual work being harder than "pen-pushing" is mindless ****. I've done both over the years and I'm just coming off a 20 year stint of pen-pushing, both in management and running my own business. I've had enough of it and I'm heading back to manual work again before it kills me. The stress levels are not worth it and it wears you down in ways that manual graft never will. So don't talk out of your harris about things you know nothing about, comrades

I for one would love to be farm working like when I was younger, but wages and a family to support dictate differently. And no I don't push paper. craftycarper
seven nights on for me= 64hrs, two days off then 2 x 12 hrs, then almost three off and back to seven nights on again . Been doing it for twelve years now, plus all the extra hours i do on top at times, but the bills still have to be paid, and these hobbies ain't cheap these days so the grind will go on & on & on, until them six little numbers come up of course.
