dustyfox
I dont care but the reason why they get paid so much is there is a shortage of drivers you pay good money to attract the drivers. Df

Df Precisely, it is all supply and demand as with any profession. The demand goes up the wages go up if there is a shortage of supply

Pushkin
Cheers mate. Any of you guys know how difficult it is to drive a tanker full of liquid - never mind that it is highly flamable? And I mean driving it regular - day in - day out stuff? Any idea what it is like driving one through peak traffic in a town? I don't. So feel I can't comment on whether they are worth it or not. What I can say though, if they feel they are genuinely worth more then it is up to them - they are in the driving seat (what a pun!). Any tanker drivers here care to comment? Pushkin
DF - I would just slow down a bit if I was you It is likely you have no idea what it is like to drive with a large shifting load and one that has no equilibrium until long after you are stationary. When you add that to the size of the tanker and the weight of it, and then take into account how much more ponderous your actions need to be - then you might begin to understand what the guy was hinting at - and even then it doesn't take into account the long hours sitting on yer arkey - trying to keep your hours legal and meet a schedule. What is the problem you have with the guy? Pushkin

Devilishdave
You are right there is nothing stoping them getting out and doing the same other then pride in what they do and the knawledge that what they are doing is for the greater good of their country. My point is a guy doing the same job in a combat zone is surely worth more pay than a guy doing the same job in the UK granted some inner city areas a re a bit rough but I dont think any are quite as dangerous as helmand. This sort of thing is at risk of blowing inflation out of control.
vole
I get paid more than them too . Thing is I am paid fairly, those guys are not. They need a wage hike big time. Re the driving, I lose concentration after an hour or so . To drive a load of maybe lethal stuff is probably pretty stressful ie remaining alert despite the monotony. With the increased taxation and cost of living we all need a decent living wage.
jerico
I work 9.5 hours a night, always nights, I do 3 jobs under the guise of security, I get my wages and after paying the various tax's, paying one compony to give me water and another to take it away, tv licence for that bbc ****, gas and leccy, rent, and more tax I have less than £200 a month to eat and play with, every day I wake up and I thank the lucky stars......... paulf
Well Im really not bothered, If I woried about all those who earn more Id never get any sleep. £30,000 isnt an awfull lot of money after tax etc and most tanker drivers have to do unsociable hours. I earn a little less but self employed doing 9-5 with minimal driving. Money isnt everything and I have time for my hobbys.
codling99
greed if you ask me,they see the company earning billions, and want a piece of it,doctors ,nurses, teachers, soldiers all on less than tanker drivers??? dangerous?? maybe, but surely their trained, lorrys are built to be safe while carrying fuel, probably filled to a limit so the lorry is stable and not wobbling about . but on the other hand,we d all like more money for what we do,so good luck to them on that score. Dave-G
They have a very good wage - allready very generous for what they do in comparison to many lower paid people who cannot hold a firm or country to ransom. They think they're hard done by because the oil companies make millions. In fairness the oil companies invest billions to make their millions. As for the antisocial hours, lack of normal family time and some tricky aspects to their job... welcome to the world that many of us live in. OldBill
IIRC, their wage loading is due to unsocial hours/days and the danger element. I do recall that getting your hazmat ticket is not cheap either. When I was in the mob, that's was all the RCT/RLC tanker driver's used to talk about - going and earning shed loads for the petrol companies. I don't begrudge them the money. They are doing a jobs that most of us can't or won't. As for doctors getting less than tanker drivers- don't have a laugh. Average earning for GPs now exceeds 100k. As for the mob, no-one stays on base rate for long. When I left I took a pay drop to join my current job. I would now be about to retire and at my projected rank were I still in would be comparable with what I get now.
