tinbum71
Hi all, just a quick note to say the police turned up ot of the blue this afternoon and apologised for the inconvenience caused. Didn't tell me what the problem had been, just that they had now lost interest in it. Thanks to all of your for the advice, the main lesson I have learnt is not to give the guns up on the doorstep. Be polite, explain why you won't and make them get a warrant. That way they will have to get evidence before taking them saving in this case, 12 days. I am now older, wiser and a member of BASC to boot!!

fallowbuck
What a saga. Glad its turned out ok for you. One small piece of advise, we in the shooting community are always under the microscope, so even if we know we are within the law and have right on our side, it is always best to avoid conflict with persons who may be antagonistic to our choice of sport! If you think you can avoid situations by shooting a bit further from a boundary, building etc it is always best to do so, even though you know your not in the wrong! Whatever people here think, our guns are never really ours and the Police can take them whenever they want ,if they they think you are a danger to public safety or have gone against your certificate conditions! Good luck in the future!
dazza
So they brought them back because they'd lost interest? That's what they said?
dustyfox
Well probably because they cant get enough evidence to prove who it was. Cant go to court without evidence they'll just throw it out of court straight away. Df

Dave-G
Excellent news mate and thanks for updating us. It just goes to show how easily someone with a grudge about shooting can mess us about for a while. I had a near escape too just recently when some kid spotted me behind a mesh fence in camo while carrying a rifle. When the investigating officer pointed out that there is nothing unlawfull about a landowner having his rabbits shot the dad was so desperate to get rid of a local shooter that he initially implied I had aimed my rifle at his boy. It seems that some people move nearer to the country to enjoy it - but don't like some of what they see.

Dave-G
Kinnel, I initially made reference in my post that someone would probably question the result - but edited it out thinking I was just being too pedantic. How old are you martin? That's not an insult - I ask because your beginning to sound like one of those old men up on the balcony in the muppet show and it's a well known fact that folk get a bit tetchy as they get older. chippy18
I dont normally get involved with all the slagging of on here. But personally i hope it turns out that this aint been one big wind up and all you doubting lot who just want to jump on what we should be taking as a fellow shooter in the ****e ( until of course it is shown to be otherwise), have to accept that sometimes things just happen differently to the way you think it works. I asked what they had been investigated, they didn't say, just that they weren't investigating any further. To me, that is losing interest. If there had been a case to answer they would've asked me, or others in the area some questions. I had the guns taken, I've had an apology and the return of my guns. End of story! Bazooka Joe
I asked what they had been investigated, they didn't say, just that they weren't investigating any further. Do you not think you deserve an explanation TB. Two plod at the door, ask for guns without a letter/warrant, saying there has being an offence committed, then only to return them 12 days later with no explanation as to why??? Something doesn't ring right here, BJ.

Something doesn't ring right here, BJ. I got the usual speil about all reports involving guns have to be taken seriously etc etc. They had no choice but to investigate the report. (thats when I asked what had been reported) Matt Perrin from BASC has recommended I write to the Cheif Constable to complain about this, several things have been done very badly, (no reciept/contact for 12 days etc) I may do, but as I have them back it's over. I'll just chalk it up to experience and move on. As I have already said, in the future we know to make them get a warrant and it puts the onus on them to get evidence from the complainant, not just investigate hearsay. Dave-G
I doubt plod would be able to offer much of an explanation without breaking the data protection act or making it obvious who the complainant was. I was lucky to get a hint of what was going on with my incident because the investigating officer was a shooter and on side so to speak. When are you coming down to cornwall next? I have another permission to check out next to the new one I took your brother to last week. Don't let them walk over you, BJ.
