Just been made redundant...

I had a horrible feeling this might happen, the way things are going with the economy. Got into work this morning to see one girl leaving in tears and the minute I got to my desk got a call from the boss. Bad news, we can't afford you any longer, state of the economy etc etc, blah blah. :welcomeani: So three gone from the company, me included.

So what now? Never lost a job before... feeling a bit stunned to tell the truth. Not sure what redundancy package I'll get at the moment, got to go back for a meeting next week. Been to the CAB and had a good hunt around for a new job today. I work in a fairly specialised industry (graphic design / advertising) so unsurprisingly there aren't tons of vacancies at the moment, as everyone seems to be cutting budgets etc.

Any of you fellas had this happen to you before? Don't want to lose my house, car, or anything else I've worked all my life for so if anyone has any advice I'd love to hear it. And to anyone who is in the same position, you have my heartfelt sympathy.

thanks for listening peeps.

cheers

Get down the job centre and make sure you sign on mate! I know some of us dont like it due to feeling dishonest but when your genuinely out of work due to something like this, its what the system was designed for! Not the ******* who sit at home all day doing **** all!

The money is **** but its better than nothing, also they will help you with a few job searches (But there mostly useless being civil service an all) :welcomeani:

Happened to me years ago, and I learned two very valuable lessons in life ....

1) Be loyal to the company that pays you the most.

2) Pay off all of your debt as soon as you can. Paying off the mortgage by an extra £25/month makes a huge difference to the total debt that you repay, plus in the event of another redundancy etc the mortgage company will look at you in a far better light.

Until I was made redundant I had never had any real financial problems, and after months of sleepless nights (I had a large mortgage and young family) I eventually came out the other side a wiser man....

So sorry to hear your news. You have my sympathy. I take it you have no redundancy cover in place?

You could do worse than speak to an employment lawyer if you know any or can afford an hour of their time for a case review. They might even do it for free for the initial review. You need to be clear the firm are not selling you short (I thought redundancy had to be preceeded by a period of consultation of 90 days otherwise they faced the possibility of an unfair dismissal claim) and that you are getting what you are entitled to. I take it there are no packages on offer and this is statutory redundancy pay only? I guess it is too early to tell from what you say.

My advice on the creditor front is to get on the phone to them quickly. Explain the position and see if they can adjust their approach to offer you payment holidays or whatever. Anything to ease the burden whilst you get sorted out. On the house front my view would be it would have to be better to keep you there with a re-structured payment plan than have it back and try to sell it in this market. Who is your lender?

All the best mate. Keep your chin up and do consider getting some advice.

I'm in the same boat fella. We are at the 30 days consultation period. I work in the Chemical Industry for a international company. Upto now we have been able to cover the costs but we all knew at work it would come to redundancies in the end

I suppose I been lucky in life ot tight (yep tight northerner) :welcomeani:. But I have never over spent and paid my mortgage off a couple of years ago. No debts and no loans

Part of me is thinking I hope to get made redundant as I have been with the company 22 years and the package is a good one but what do I do after that. If there any jobs out there

Chin up mate and don't let it grind you down

Thanks for all your replies guys. One thing I certainly won't be doing is sitting on my **** moping. Need a new job asap so my new job is getting me a job! Don't know what my redundancy package will be like as it's not been discussed yet. I just got the 'letter' from the boss and an appointment to go back and discuss things. Why? If they're gonna sack you off the least they could do is let you know where you stand straight away! :welcomeani: Anyway he did say on my way out that I wouldn't be 'left in the lurch'... whatever that means! :P

One thing I've learnt though, never be complacent. I've been in the job 3 years and been promoted twice in that time. I've worked my butt off for them and won and maintained big accounts and I never thought I'd be the one in the firing line! Feeling pretty stepped on to be honest. Anyway, gotta get on with it I suppose and just put it down to experience.

cheers

Yep, I got the bad news back in July... I've been kicking about for ages (I refuse to sign on) but luckily the company paid me off, so I've been living off that. Unfortunately as my experience is limited to a couple of fields (financials and HR), I'm struggling to find anything

Anyone recruiting for a new employee in the Herts area; PMs my way please...! :welcomeani:

...On the upside, I've been shooting loads!

My consolation to everyone else in the same boat.

SL just remember that it is nothing you have done wrong, just get out there and start looking.

Ive been at Risk myself a few times and in my position i have made quite a few people redundent over the years, which is the worse part of the job.

Normally when i have had a conversation with someone about redundency i would then meet up with them and go through all their entitlements etc, i doubt if you would get much as you have only been there a few years.

Have a good chat with your boss and dont fall out as you never know what can be around the next corner, i have saved peoples jobs when im conducting the final leaving interview, (But i do work hard to actually make sure i explore every angle possible)

its a shame these days that there is no loyalty with any employer, ive been with my company 15 years and believe me im under no illusion that my time will come one day, no matter how much you do for them.

You should be able to find out more about redundency pay by googling it on the web.

Have you thought about signing up with an angency,I wil PM you a guys name, he his involved with IT but not sure if he deals with your line of work of not but its worth a phone call

Cheers

Getting made redundant has been a way of life for me in the Engineering industry..... Was made reduntant two days out of me apprenticeship soon got used to it ever since. Had enough notice and redundo letters to wall paper the whole of my house over the last 20 years. Deffo gives you the 'Take all yer can and give little back attitude'

I can however see the daunting side for those that have been in a regular job for any length of time...... It is hard to realize I know.

Keep positive you will pick something up for sure.

Work is short here too. I'm nowhere near as busy as I was a year ago. I'm a gardener, have a new mortgage and a small loan. My target now is to pay the loan off asap and then put everything I have spare into the house. I've never suffered financially before, and I'm still doing ok now. I have a bad feeling for what's coming though, it's going to be a harsh lesson if I'm not careful.

SL, I hope you find something soon buddy. You've got the right attitude towards work so if something does come up there's a good chance you'll be getting the job. If you can't find anything, then take all the free training you can. There's no same in taking dole money, I don't know why some of you guys refuse to do it? I know if I got to the point where I could scrounge I'd be first in the line, I've paid into the pot so I'm happy to take from it if I have a genuine need for some of my money back :welcomeani:
