dead-eye
Hi, bought some new cartridges yesterday for foxes Fioocchi Semi Magnum. The shot size is 2/0 i think its some french size anyone know what its equivelent too in our size? They seem too work well though because i dropped a fox at 60yds with one last night. Merry Christmas.
henry d
Italian size about AAA+ and a lucky shot IMHO, but at least it is a dead fox. I would keep it under 35yds for a load like that.

keen shot
oh, i wouldn't like to shoot a fox over 25 yards with a shotgun
dead-eye
A lot of the guys i go fox shooting with dont think twice about taking a shot at a fox at 60yds. We went fox hunting today (with two hounds) and a fox bolted out of the woods at 50yds, in front of me dropped him easy if i stook to 25yds i would barely never get a shot. Guest cookoff013
foxes can be shot with a shotgun, but a little care and preperation can make a huge difference. if i intentionally went out for fox i`d have tight chokes and some bb`s cartridges in a high payload or 1`s will do. i`d not take a potshot with 6`s way out of compfortable range. on the wrong choke. MC
I am quite shocked that you took a rangey shot with a cartridge that you didn't know what the shotsize was. It could have been 9's for all you knew
tinytim38
What make rangefinder do you own? just curious
Cushat
In my opinion there is no acceptable cartridge/choke combo for 50 to 60 yard foxes with a shotgun.
casts_by_fly
Cush, You've not shot a 3" #4 or #2 buck through a tight shooting choke then. While I would rather have a 223 or similar on a 60 yard fox, I'd have no problem touching the trigger with a good load of heavy buckshot that I know patterns well. Thanks, Rick

Munst
I don't mean to be rude dead-eye but if you regularly shoot fox at '60yards' with a shotgun and have never had a runner then you are either officially the luckiest man who has ever lived (and you should now go and buy 100 lottery tickets ) or you need to work on your range finding. With something like this the skill of the shooter doesn't come into it, its the ability of the gun so please don't take this as a personal insult. edit - i can't speel Edited January 9, 2009 by Munst
al4x
Right place or not, 6-shot at that range is just plain foolish and in my opinion shows a complete disregard and lack of respect for the quarry. or a stock farmer or game keeper whose livelihood depends on keeping foxes under control. Sometimes you have to take the chance given, I know people who have shot at foxes they shouldn't have but they were lampshy very switched on ones who they had been after for too long. It happens but its pest control not fox conservation rather than sport shooting foxes
paulos
Whether it is sport or pest control is irrelevant. If you are shooting at any live quarry it should be treated with the respect it deserves. It is a living creature and if it needs despatching then fair enough, but should be done so humanely. bill jack
2/0 Fiocchi 42g semi-magnum. It's the Italian equivalent to British ( not American ) BB, i.e. 4.1mm and a size below our AAA which is 5.2mm. Apparently ideal for foxes.
