charlie 1
I am thinking about getting a defender but my biggest issue is the mpg. as i have to travel a little bit for work and don't want to constantly be throwing money into the diesel tank. so you guys who drive defenders what mpg do you get? thanks charlie

Wiltsmark
My TD5 does about 30ish,but for the pleasure i get from it i dont worry about running it,if i did i would chop it for something else.
Baldrick
Two un-modded Td5 Defenders (wearing AT tyres) do about 27mpg. Two Td5 Discos do about 28-29mpg, rising to at least 31mpg on a motorway run. We've also just bought a '58-reg Defender 90, which seems to do pretty much bang on the 27mpg quoted. Landy
Have a Drefender 90 TD5 which is as aerodynamic as a house brick so if I keep right foot light and steady I can get 30+ equally heavy footed I can knock it down to less than mid 20s. Harnser
Td5 disco averaging at least 30 mpg . Not had a chance to try it on a run lately . Have been adding two stroke oil to the diesel and this has enhanced the performance . Harnser .

John_R
I am getting 26 MPG in my TD5 on ATs if it is mostly motorways and if I keep to 60 MPH most of the time. I used to get 32 MPG in my 200 TDi, so I think something needs to be looked at. If I am doing short runs too much it goes down to 22/23 MPG. I changed all the oils and filters when I got the TD5 back in March, so maybe I should clean out the intercooler and check for anything else that might be costing me fuel. Rgds D2D cheers m8 i knew the chunkys where noisy as that is what i have on my freelander now but i didn't know they would make such a difference to mpg. i may have to stick to a/t then if i go for the defender. thanks

buchangun
My landy is a serries 3. 88 van - 2 1/4 petrol - 16 to 18mpg ..... now thats a car!
kingo
My discovery v8 lpg bearing in mind i pay 49p a litre works out around town about 28mpg and motorway run about 32mpg, so works out about the same as a TD5, but you have the lovely V8 sound and lot smoother than a diesel plus the V8 can move this beast quite quickly when needed, plus buy one already converted and it win win situation as they are still cheaper than a TD5 to buy... pavman
freelander II with the 2.5 turbo jag unit giving 35 avg which is nice, however its not my first choice which would be another Defender but with 75 miles round trip to work its already £350 a month derv bill
hairyduck
30mpg on the motorway for my 110 running mud terrains, 26/27 around town. I do have overdrive which helps a bit on the mpg and it's also chipped, not sure how much differene that made to the mpg though, not a lot I don't think
