The benelli and beretta ones are probably the best to look at. Very pretty guns, quite feminine. If you want quality guns that will last, you buy an escort. fact. deadeye Posted September 6, 2009 Report Share Posted September 6, 2009 depends on your budget and how you plan to use it. i shoot clays mostly with my beratta 687 spII sporter and i use it and my benelli montefeltro in the field for game and birds. the chief virtues of th e benelli are: 1-recoil operated montefeltro bolt. the gas goes out the barrel and it is extremely simple and reliable. with good ammo it is flawless and you can clean it thoroughly in about 15 to 20 minutes---as fast as you can an over and under 2- the benelli montefeltro is (12 ga 28") approx. 7 lbs.. its a pleasure to carry afield and a super gun for all types of field shooting and water fowling. it handles light field loads up through 3" mags. 3- buld qualilty is as good as you will find anywhere. 4-being 7 lbs. and recoil operated the recoil is more than a gas gun like the beretta 391. in all farness none of the worlds top professional clays shooters to my knowledge use a recoil operated gun such as the benelli and many use the beretta 391 guns--i would guess that it would be on account of more recoil. for the average recreational shooter and sportsman this is much less of an issue. the benelli shines and really stands out in the real world in reliablity and excellent function in all types of weather. walk 4 or 5 miles afield with it and the lower weight is a great advantage. if you can only have one gun for everything(clays and well as field shooting) the beretta al391 sporting clay is hard to beat. less recoil, reliable, but being a gaser it will take longer to clean and is inheritly more complicated. it also handles all 2 3/4 thru 3" shells. i really like the simplicity of the benelli and it has been flawless. i personally would not consider the benelli super black eagle 3.5 " mag. i don't see any point in 3.5 " shells and this gun will not be as reliable shooting target loads and lighter field loads because it is set up for mags and heavy field loads. i would stay clear of any 3.5 " mag. --- i personally do not see the point. both the beretta and benelli can be had in synthetic or wood. i personally like the montefeltro with a nice satin walnut stock and foreend and a nicer blued job. thats just me---i like just enjoy shooting a gun with walnut rather than synthetic--purely personal. i do some water fowling with a friend who has used a beretta 391 field gun with wooden stock and fore end. i have seen that gun function in a drving rain and once it got saturated in a canoe that took on some water. it has been a very reliable gun for him. i shoot clays with several people who have the 391 guns and they shoot hundreds of rounds between thorough cleanings. point is, they are really good. i can not fault them. If you want quality guns that will last, you buy an escort. fact. j@mes, isn't the escort basically a copy of benelli manufactered in turkey? do they handle well? how well has it held up and has it been reliable? p.s. do you think that benelli and beretta semi owners are alittle on the poofey side of things? i guess that a beretta or benelli semi are kind of like a fashionable accessory like a chic handbag or a cute pair of shoes to top off an outfit. all joking aside---have you put your escort to the test? does it hold up well and perform well in rough conditions? i have thought about getting one for wild fowling in salt water and marsh conditions---basically make one my beater gun---so do they hold up? leeboy Posted September 8, 2009 Report Share Posted September 8, 2009 Nothing poofy about a Benelli. unless you think that total reliability and ease of maintainence is poofy ? My montefeltro shoots flawlessly. It can be stripped and cleaned within a matter of a few minutes. I have let it go more than a thousand shots between cleanings and it hasn't malfunctioned once. Im sure it will go several thousand shots between cleanings and still be working fine. Even after 1000 shots it wasn't particularly dirty. The enertia operating system is so much quicker and easier to clean than gas operated systems. It is also light enough to carry around all day, weighing around 7lbs. I use it for all my shooting (although i rarely shoot clays) and wouldn't part with it. As for felt recoil, i have never noticed any difference in felt recoil between my Monte and any other similarly weighted 12g i have shot. I have had many days on crows and pigeons where i have fired well over 100 shots and not noticed the recoil. The idea that recoil or enertia operated guns are heavy on recoil is just nonsense. Felt recoil comes down to gun fit, and the type of ammo being fired. Although a heavy gun will soak up recoil better. I certainly dont feel poofy when i have got a big bag of dead crows and pigeons and my gun has been a pleasure to shoot. I have no complaints at all about my Monte.
