BSA-airgunner
to be honest your doing them a favour so i dont recon on paying any thing
MC
I am sure that the farmer whose land you shot on wouldn't agree with your attitude. Go and tell him that you are doing him a favour and see what reaction you get.
Ferret Master
I see it as mutually beneficial as opposed to a favour. I feel that my farmer's are doing me a favour but I hope I am helping them as well. You get to shoot, and hopefully you keep his vermin numbers down too. However I'm sure many could survive without a shooter and the added stress of an armed person walking around their land. FM
alexr
I am in two minds about this 1) in Cheshire its very hard to get permission and I have in the past considered offering an annual retainer 2) if we start paying for the right to shoot then it is only a matter of time before most farmers will charge for the privilege of shooting over their land. Bit of an issue really self interest or mucking it up for everyone else
Dave-G
If thats what it takes to get a local shoot then do it and enjoy yourself mate. The farmer has a right to any income he can get from his business interest. If he has a real problem with vermin he will probably thank you for doing it for him and not charge for it. Almost any other hobby you choose to pursue on someone else's land will probably cost you. We paid a small fortune to a farmer so we could fly RC Helicopters there. Highlander
You pay for most things (if not all) in life so why not shooting (especially if that's your passion) but have you tried the I'll scratch your back approach (only get it right or you might be the quarry! ) Many smaller farmers need a hand at times, have you tried offering? Have you a skill they might have a need for? Perhaps farmer needs vermin control and if he's like most he'll begrudge paying for it BUT if you take that on you'd better do a proper job! A NO farmer would think you were doing him a favour so treat what you get with respect.

jonevo
I dont and I wouldn't even consider paying the farmer /Landowner for pest control. I have quite a lot of land to shoot / ferret on in Cheshire.......... but then again maybe I am lucky How much is a box of ammo and fuel for the car etc.... plus x amount the farmer wants from you. shooting can become expensive if you allow it to . Raja Clavata
I'd pay for dear, just about everything else should be based on (nearly) mutual benefit. My farmer tells me he appreciates the time I put in on his land, he even offered to buy me a slab of pigeon carts ealier in the year, of course I had none of it. He'll get a bottle at Christmas and I get best part of 1000 acres (and growing) to walk around, shoot over and train my dog on - bargain! J@mes
Have you got anything you can offer instead of money? skill/ trade for example? I currently swap electrical work for clay shooting - 1 hours electrical work gets one round on the clays, so works out at £28/hour. suits us both! hendersons
i started off by offering to shoot rats in the yard so I got my foot in the door that way. He has somebody who has been shooting deer for years so now he does that and i'm able to shoot everything else, with a open offer always there that we can go out with each other (me stalking and him doing whatever he fancies pigeon, rats, corvids or rabbits). I also take the farmer out with me for the occaisional trip lamping. But I do make sure i offer to help out in anyway I can whether that be helping him lookafter any of his animals or making the occaisional meat delivery for him (he sells direct to restaurants and pubs) especially in the last few weeks when he has been busy harvesting. I also bring him vegetable bits from my work to supplement his pigs food. I think all this helps and we have now become friends socialising together. But no i would not pay for vermin control unless i had absolutely no choice. As he puts it he has plenty of offers from people offering to pay him to shoot on his land but he knows that me and the guy who stalks are going to turn up on a regular basis and appreciate what we get, respect his property/animals and lend a hand with anything else he needs
groach1234
depends what you are shooting. I would pay for duck and deer but not for vermin but thats me. George

rattzzz
Hi all Before you consider paying for pigeon shooting take in to account the costs to you first. Usually a 4x4,fuel to run it,cartridge cost, hides and equipment, clothing etc,etc
vole
The few crows and rabbits I shoot are only a drop in the ocean on the farm I shoot mostly. Being only 150 acres I could kill every one only to have all the neighbours vermin flood in. Where I do really pay my way is keeping the place mole free. I enjoy it and tend to put alot of effort into it. Apart trapping and from bottles of whisky at Christmas I could not pay anything more than I do already really. I could not compete with paying folks,it would be quite a strange concept to pay for vermin shooting anyhoo.
