Bottle Time

This weekend is normally the time that we deliver our bottles to our farmers to wish them well and thank then for letting us shoot. So we set off like santa's sleigh with the bottles jingling in the backgroud. We had deliverd three when we decide to look at a rape field we had shot about three weeks ago. As we moved up the road to get a better view we came across Bunny Blaster scanning the same field . We had a chat a he said he would shoot another field that he had looked at previously and we would shoot this one and spook the birds between us to our advantage, so he drove off . I phoned the farmer to tell him what we were doing , he would not let us shoot as his other pigeon shooter was upset that we had shot all the pigeons the other week and he was shooting today, I have shot this farm in excess of twentyfive years addmitedly only when he had pigeon problems , the other shooter walks round and shoots every week.I phoned Bunny Blaster and told him we were moving on and wished him luck. We drove to the block of rape that we had shot one hundred and one pigeons on two weeks ago . It had birds moving so we set up . We used the Cosd method of ten thawed birds on cradles and two on the magnet , the Yickdaz method which is the cheaper northern system would not have worked on this farm??????.

We were shooting by 11.00 and it was steady with birds battling with the strong wind off our backs we shot till 15.00 and started to clear up and picked up one hundred and two birds. I received a text from Bunny Blaster later on to say nobody had shot the other rape field and he had shot fiftyplus on his field.

Saturday saw us heading in a totally different direction west of the city still delivering bottles, we had delivered two more when the third farm had a good number on his rape so we delivered the bottle and informed him that we would be shooting. As we walked across the field all the birds were on the headlands as the centre of the field was covered with Charlock which the farmer had said was mixed with the rape seed to keep off the pigeons but the seed on the headlands was pure rape. We set up with our backs to the sun with a stiff wind from left to right we had twelve fresh birds from the day before. The hedges had all been cut very low and the hide was sticking up above it but it was thick enough to prevent the birds seeing any movement. Some came as if on rails and others spooked at the decoys so it was challenging shooting. they kept comming to the decoys and we did not pack up till 15.30 and picked up one hundred and twentyseven birds . The light was fading and the picture was not one of our best but it was our traditional Christmas Picture hence the hat on the dog!!

It took us another two hours to finish delivering out Cristmass cheer.

Can I and DB wish the PW Massive a Happy Christmas a Healthy and Prosperous New Year with plenty of sport thrown in.

Well done PC I don;t understand why the farmer has mixed rape and charlock the farms round here often try to spray it out if it grows in with the rape.

I think the theory is that the Charlock is so tall it prevents the birds landing in it and they will spray it off on the spring, it seemed to work in this farm as no birds landed in the centre of the field.
