Nice Day out

Well, Friday night my friend called and asked if I fancied a day out on pigeons, the farmer had called and said "He'd seen 1,000's"....My friend said don't get excited, you know 1,000's could mean 10 with farmers propensity to exaggerate slightly.

Anyway, off into the Cotswolds we went, and looked for flight lines....nothing much about and it was a very still warm Saturday morning. We drove for about 45mins and saw nothing, so went to the actual fields the farmer said he saw the "Columba Palumbus". Again nothing flighting, but groups of 6 and 8 on the ground in amongst the rape stubble. we drove through the fields to send them up to try and gauge numbers and try and see a line develop. Again, not a lot and we sat for another 40 mins just watching the field. My friend who has many more years experience than me decided to set up the hide in between three fields with our back to a very small tree concealing us with a net in front. We had a magnet to our right and two flappers, and two tight groups of decoys to the left and right of the hide, we had to shoot straight in front and right, couldn't go too far left as there were houses in the distance and with any wind the shot would have carried to the roof tops. As soon as we set up, about 11:30 by now, bang I had two birds from the hide and he got one from where he moved his truck to. After 30 mins the wind picked up to a strong blow, and OMG had my friend picked the right spot, we were getting groups of 6 or 8 flighting straight up the field and into the patten. Sun and wind was on our back and they couldn't see us. You could literally stand up and take your time in aiming as the sun totally blinded them, something I've never experienced before and all I could hear in my head was JDog shouting get down get down in case there's a follower lol....

Well, it's the best day I've ever had, we finished up at 19:00 with 165 picked up and 5 we couldn't find. Being novice, I couldn't believe it took us over an hour to pick up and pack up. You don't realise how much work a big bag creates, but OMG it was worth it. Anyway, luckily the Game Dealer in Farringdon leaves the chiller open for you to just drop of and leave details, so we went straight there and dropped them all off.

I've attached some pictures....

A few points;

Those fields look suspiciously like some of mine.

I hadn't realised that you were an expert with Photoshop.

You think you are hooked on rabbit shooting. This will be worse.

Can I hand you over now you have met a real expert?

It won't always be as good as that.

Finally, very well done.

LOL.....the cheek of accusations and subterfuge with photoshop, I'm deeply offended :yahoo::lol::good:

I wouldn't dream of poaching your fields JDog, but it is close to your neck of the woods, you are known to said friend who unfortunately isn't on this site. I'm always hooked on pigeon shooting, it's just my perms, as you know, are all cattle so I haven't got crops to shoot over :(

You'll never get rid of me, I'm like a bad smell.....easy........ :lol:

Well done lloydi sound and looks like a cracking day, I like the shaded hide position and as you say when the sun is at your back you can just stand out and they keep coming. I'm glad thay you've found a new Cotswold Mentor and you now appreciate the time consuming large bag syndrome. I hope this is the first of many big bags and that you can persuade the pigeons to leave the local permissions on to yours.
