farmer's complaint

I drove over to the farm that I had shot 107 birds on last week, to see if there was any activity in the very strong winds we had today.

As i was pulling in; the famer's wife was just pulling out, and gave me a wave and then a momentary finger wag.

I drove down towards the fields and on the way the farmer apppeared from behind a " spud machine" and said that his missus had walked the dogs the day after I had been and there were pigeons in the field on the outer grass track. I looked puzzled and asked him exactly whereabouts ; as I had picked up ALL the pigeons that I could see.

He said that he had never had to mention it to me before, as I was a "very clean shooter" usually. I asked him how many birds there were and he said 3. " 3?" I said. Well that can't be that bad out of 110. I said the only answer I could think of was that they might have been shot and fell out of the trees- delayed reaction.

Then to both our AMAZEMENT, a pigeon promptly dropped out of the sky and landed 5 feet away from the farmer. DEAD. We both looked at each other and i very quickly quipped " well I never shot that one, and you are my witness". :good: He didn't know where to put himself or what to say. i went over and picked up the bird and proceeded to pluck it there and then. No signs of any pellet shots, and we decided that it might have just been knackered from flying about in the strong winds.

He apologised about his slight concern he had with the 3 dead ones his missus had found, and I drove off promising to return tomorrow for another look.

I don't know where you are in the country and if you've even heard of the VLA (Veterinary Laboratories Agency) but they are a government funded series of centres distributed around the country. One of their major roles is disease surveillance, and they are very interested in monitoring signs of new and emerging diseases.

You could contact your vet for their details. They would likely do some free post-mortems and find the cause.

May just be the beginning of something?

OK lets not get all conspiritorial or start rumours about pigeon diseases etc. Two things likely to have happened, birds get shot without shooter realising it and fly off only to die sometime later usually from blood loss or as is often the case at this time of year especially with young pigeons they gorge themselves on some foods, acorns, dressed seed etc which in small quantities don't harm them but in large quantities can make them pretty ill and even kill them.

One pigeon dead under wires could be explained by hitting said wire but a number is more likely to be one or other of the above.

No need to panic this is all quite normal in the cycle of things.

Dave is it time that you had a bath as it would appear that you are too appealing to woodies or was it a ploy from the farmers wife to get you back to the farm?:good:

Good Shooting

Pigeon controller

Im sure your right, you feel there must be a simple explanation for this but it would be interesting to know exactly whats going on, as groups of dead birds isnt really the norm. :hmm: I cant help thinking that if this was just something they were eating wouldnt this sort of thing be more common :hmm:
