Retired Police Dog

I can only comment for Hampshire, they gift the dogs out if they are suitable, some of them make great pets.On the other hand some of the dogs are down right nasty and would never be suitable as a pet.

My mate was out with anouther handler exercising the dogs (GSD's)The other handlers dog ran straight at my mate and took and chunk out of his hand severing tendons and part severing his thumb. He is still off sick 11 months later. The dog was destroyed immediatly as would any other domestic dog in those circumstances.

Reading the letter it sounds like Wales Constabulary are doing what most Police managers do best and thats Bully not manage.

Believe me I bet there is more to this than meets the eye.

I realy feel for this bloke, his wife and family.I hope they win.

Signed, lots of people all over the world getting in on it, good on 'em too.

I lived with GSD's all my early years (0-17) if properly trained and looked after they are the most amazingly affectionate and loyal dogs. In my view you can train any dog to be viloent if you spend the time doing it, some will be more capable than others in inflicting harm (like a fit GSD).

Just like human soldiers are trained for battle, dogs are trained for their job. Some soldiers can't handle what they see or can't switch off - dogs are exactly the same. Spotting the traits and fixing them or stopping using the dog is the only thing you can do.

The plot thickens. The Gwent police are now saying that they will probably sign Saxon over to the prison service - he has been denied a licence on the grounds that he is unsafe to work with, but it's OK to hand him over to the prison service!! There's more to this than meets the eye - it seems to be a personal vendetta and the dog and his handler are being targetted.

People representing his handler and family have offered to buy the dog from the police force, for between £800 to £1500, I believe - but bet they won't sell!

There was a meeting about his future yesterday, at which the police said very little, but they whipped out this press release beforehand:

'SAXON - PRESS STATEMENT

A great deal of public interest has been shown in the future of the police dog, Saxon, which has recently been withdrawn from operational duties as a result of concerns about its temperament.

Saxon will be assessed tomorrow, Tuesday 8th August, by HM Prison Service with a view to his working with them in the future.

Such a move would enable Saxon to continue to use training and skills acquired as a police dog in a more closely controlled environment where access to the general public is restricted. This would be a positive outcome since our priority has always been to ensure the safety of the public.'

Incidentally, petition now has over 10,900 signatures

A friend tells me there is an alternative story circulating ( we can't find anything on the Net ) that the dog attacked two Policemen on seperate occasions, which is why it was withdrawn from duty.

The Police Authorities are against letting its Handler have it, in case it attacks someone again and they are held responsible, knowing it has happened before.

They recognise that euthanasia is no longer an option because of the publicity and are looking for a "controlled" compromise.

Whilst we can't find any validation of this story, it does have an element of probability about it.

The actual story told by this guys wife certainly says the PC himself was bitten by the dog. So what, you train a tog to bite things you are probably going to get a nip.

The wife has said publicly they will sign any legal document or disclaimer, so the public safety thing is a nonsese too - if they take ownership and legal responsibility then its not coming back on the force.

Sounds like someone has rattled the wrong cage, if its a high enough cage I can't see a result other than one which will be specially crafted to annoy this poor PC.

Its a tricky one as always there are two sides to the story. I guess the police may be worried of legal action if they give him away and he then goes on to savage someone. He's being withdrawn from service for a reason and while they do wind up police dogs agression wise I guess he's gone too far.

I have a friend who had an ex police dog that seemed fine then just began to show agression to him which he could deal with then did it towards his young son and that was the only time he did it as my friend wasn't prepared for the possible outcome.
