  1. I'd go with taking a wee but if you have wooden fencing then they don't like proper creosote which of course you cannot buy at B&Q thanks to the EU however if you were a farmer then the farm merchants still sell it .
  2. You can get aluminium welding rod (fleaby) which melts under normal propane torch temperatures and yes you can blue aluminium but not in the same way as steel industrial processes (first job out of school 30 odd years ago) involve anodising but looking on the web Dylon is reckoned to do the job quite well
  3. Not necessarily just a very good chicken supplier. The roast chickens I remember of my youth free range killed on the farm were almost exactly the same flavour as young pheasant, the shot older pheasant is indeed a lot gamier but since most commercial shoots supply young birds fed on grain it is to be expected. The question is where to buy a good chicken the yellow fatty corn fed are pretty good (sainsbugs) but find a farmer who sells direct and you have the bird I remember not the supermarket reared in sheds with a thousand of its mates taste- ask Hugh Furry-whatsisname.
  4. You'll fare better selling the Freeloader privately and turning up with cash to haggle about the sticker price . There are a few local Landy specialists (this side of Cheshire) Bollington, Offerton, New Mills Buxton and you could always check the wall at Landranger in Stockport for a bargain. let me know which is best for you and I'll dig out an address while I think on theres Bowlers Kennels on Marple Road who always seem to have one of Solihulls finest for sale. 8. I have to ask the question does anybody( on the forum) actually eat Canada's and are they tasty enough to warrant space in the freezer. Derek
  9. Just a clip of at 6 months I have tried taking longer movies of his progress since but he is rather quicker now and difficult to catch with a compact camera especially in heavy cover it's a bit like trying to follow Tigger if you know what I mean.
  10. Heres a thought Remy our black lab ( improving all the time retrieving from day 1) is one of a litter all of which were black . Since then the breeder has had another litter (some still available PM for contact details nr Beverley Yorks) and all have been Choccies Sire is black, Dam is Choccy both are solid working dogs used to beating and rough shooting. So what would you want black or choccy >99% genetically the same, same background , same parents but differently coloured. I haven't heard of a genetically linked to colour problem with labs unlike cockers. Just a recessive gene in the mix.
  11. We had a trot round the Tabley Fair this weekend without the dogs though we had considered it Remy not having had a run yet. However I am rather glad they were at home in the pen, my reasoning being the layout of the tests. I have always believed that these things are meant to be fun and something most dogs should be able to do albeit maybe not at the speeds we see trials dogs run. So we sat and watched dog after dog fail and the reasons became very apparent the dummys were launched high and far from a pukka cartridge powered launcher most landing about 60yds away which in the way of things is not too far away( though I would always hope my shot game dropped well inside that range) but the dogs were not seeing them for the good reason that they were fired directly into the sun the dogs which were picking them ran when clouds were covering the sun. Just a small thing but something a good spaniel should be able to get over by running up the scent and yes that wasn't happening as the breeze was running across and away from the dogs so handling at range was the only option which is a bit far out for most dogs. I've seen a lot of scurries, water tests etc some well thought out some not but in future even if I have taken the trouble to take the dogs with me I will look critically at the layout before subjecting a dog to a test weighted against him.
  12. I used AVG for years dumped it this year in favour of Avira when AVG became bloatware and despite being tighter than a Mallards bum I paid for a copy to get the email protection not available in the free version.
  13. Never tried it myself BFWIW down the poulterers get a turkey or large chicken carcase the type they sell for making stock and hang it out of reach in a bush in a position that you can shoot from cover and wait for the little beggars to try to get to it.
  14. Open Windows Task Manager ctrl+alt+del click on the cpu tab and see whats taking all your cpu time, wauclt is one of the prime suspects , googleupdate if you have chrome and any number of update download managers Virus checkers amongst them . Trouble comes when you have several competeing it becomes a pain and can cause a lockup BTW if you want to do a remote virus scan Housecall does a pretty good job we use it periodically along with the usual checker.
  15. Plan B had to take herself's Scooby back for an MOT retest- fail was a broken antiroll bar link (made of plastic I ask you) after her chauffuer used it to go shooting (according to herself) easy job but included a shopping trip. Could be walked up ducks in the morning Update : went for evening flighting instead hung about under the crow/pigeon flightline flushed one from the tree canopy but dead quiet, heavy cloud meant early night nothing flying , went and set up on the duck but it was getting too dark to get a clear view when a single Mallard dropped in and bailed shortly after encouraged by Ace (ESS) clean miss as the duck crossed into the shade of the trees.
  16. Looking at the photo's I thought Walnut for sure the Beech stocks I've had were less well defined grain and with a distinct pinkish shading (Baikal Gamo etc ) but I took the trouble to check a retail site and now I am not so sure Branthwaite Air Guns it appears that Air Arms may finish their Beech stocks to look more like Walnut ?
  17. Chippy Tea -snake and pygmy pie chips and gravy herself fish and chips with spicy curry sauce from Timperley Fish Bar if Carlsberg owned Chippys this would be the one!
  18. As an angler of many years can I remind everyone of the split shot ban implemented to protect wildfowl from ingestion of lead. When the 'scientific' evidence was produced to support the ban it was unequivocal the only shot ingested was from angling weights no shooting shot whatsover was found. We have another ban now which contradicts all that evidence so on that basis somebody has been telling huge porkies somebody tell me which organisation supported both bans? and produced evidence to support the claims made. and which fool drew the conclusion that shooting duck over a field would result in shot falling in a position where duck would be likely to ingest sufficient quantities to be harmful.
  19. I agree with WGD trying to promote hunting a young dog into sharp cover too early will make it shy.Take your time bracken is superb for training a young dog into cover placing dummies underneath- especially where it is broken down instils the habit of pushing in amongst cover . Almost as bad as gorse for young dogs are young nettles and brambles remember young dogs still have tender pads and noses, road walking helps toughen pads as does running on sand.

  25. I've a set of Stormkloth camo they are much too warm for active shooting unless its sub zero but A1 for hide or roost or duck flighting. There are several grades the lightweight are pretty good too.One or two traders on fleaby sell them. They are very like a good tweed suit in weight but much warmer waterproof and have that stealthy nap so no rustling like you get with nylon coated and much as I love my old Barbour Solway they don't stiffen up when the frost hits like it does so thats a big plus.
