All are insured with different companies, the dogs are 6 and 7, the cat 11, the cat costs as much as the dogs due to her age. To be honest I did the comparison sites and then looked at levels of cover etc, didn't buy cheapest at any point but didn't pay more than 15 a month for any of them. Fenboys £30 a month for two dogs is probably similar but maybe slightly higher cover levels.

The post count thing is to discourage people who've just bought a gun and fancy doing some hunter/gatherer stuff, from jumping on Google, arriving here and then expecting to immediately be onto some free shooting permission because they've gone to the time and effort to Google 'shooting permission'. This is one of the ways that I choose to weed out the wannabes, sorry if you don't like it, but you'd probably like the face to face meeting even less then .Permissions are generally not easy to come by. I hope you get some luck in finding some.

I've already totalled up what the guns, Landie and motorbike will fetch if necessary. With you all the way on that one, material things can be re-bought later.

To be honest, I have 2 dogs and a cat all insured. 40 quid a month roughly, and while you can argue that its almost 500 a year, just one small op for any of them could easily cost that. I am currently going through a situation with one of the dogs where, because I had changed companies recently and was in the initial period when you can't claim, **** law dictated that a tumour suddenly appeared which has subsequently been removed. We are still going through the after care and so far the cost has been circa 1400 pounds. I will contain to pay until he's fixed or unfixable, it's not a consideration to draw a line as far as cost is concerned. All the time I'm earning I'll keep paying. All it has done is reinforce the importance of having current insurance all the time. Lesson learned.

As always, the Internets written word in no way shows the intention behind the words, only the words written. What I read was another post that rather than offering an explanation or correction, was instead merely demeaning, and it's not the first one. That's what I responded to and I don't feel the response was particularly rude, certainly no more rude than you were, if you feel different maybe your looking at it from a different context. It's not meant to be rude, but I'll stand by the sentiment.

If anyones in a position where they can't afford a large bill, then although you may pay more over the life of the animal, for the small monthly payments, it takes all of the pain out of a situation like this. The only decision that would have needed to be made would be how quickly to operate to fix the leg. I wouldn't have a dog or cat uninsured now.

Did nobody else read the article in Shooting Times a couple of weeks ago? They did the maths on velocity correlation to distance, on a 30 mph clay at 35 yards, the clay would have moved a whole 4" further by the time the slower load arrived, hardly the end of the world in a 30" pattern. The only real benefit is a bit more energy when it arrives, so only really valid on really rangy stuff.

I have to say, if I knew of one of my wildfowling companions using lead, I'd have a word and if they continued, I'd be letting the club know. I'm not prepared to let one individual put at risk the entire clubs prospects.

Spot on comment. Which is why, when I got offered a big permission that I knew I wouldn't be able to service properly, I had two choices. Decline the offer or, as I did, set up a small syndicate of like minded shooters, most of whom are on here. That way opening the sport up a little more to a few others. I personally think that's a better option than offering an possibly inadequate service. We don't get the option to ease up on them, we are surrounded by quite a lot of National Trust land and as such there seems to be a never ending supply of pigeon and corvid. It's enough of a job to keep the numbers pegged back without giving them a 1/4 of the year break.

I do appreciate and understand that there is an awful lot of good that comes from game shoots and the way they are run. Certainly from a conservation and habitat point of view. As for vermin control, I shoot the same land that a game shoot is on, the reason we were INVITED on was because the game shoot couldn't be ***** to do any control other than fox. As a result we now do the rest. You might want to take a look at what a lot of the wildfowling clubs are up to from a conservation point of view as well before climbing too high on you horse. It is not in doubt or dispute that game shoots have a lot of benefit, it is also not in doubt that game shoots putting lead shot wildfowl into the food chain made the national press, it is also without doubt that game shoot keepers allegedly killing BOP also invariably makes the national press. From that point of view they are undoing a lot if not more of the good work they do in my opinion. Ask Joe Public in the street what gamekeepers do and I'll bet killing BOP comes up before conservation. Much of that of course is down to the effectiveness of the RSPB.
