At the risk of sounding disrespectful, you may be missing a trick. Lots of clays can be shot using maintained lead, lots can be broken by pulling ahead, however, a few are best snap shot. Think a crosser through a gap in the trees. By the time you see it, it's too late to follow and pull ahead, or get ahead and work out lead, you just need to 'throw' the gun at it and pull the trigger. Sounds crude and basic I know, but, on some birds, particularly fast ones it is the way forward for me.

Aye, Rothenberger Sure fire and Mapp gas will be all you need, it's what I use. Oh, don't forget to use brazing flux (normally a powder, dip a hot rod into it), plumbers flux isn't really up to the job.

Camo onesie, in case I get a called out.... Well I do live in Brighton, the gay capital of the UK!

Noise and vibration is the key, I tried some luminous ones this year, certainly no better than a good surface lure.

anyone else DIY honed some shotgun barrels?

Is he easily pleased? -
Are they all the same? In base function yes. In subtle differences no. And to be honest, if you have just started shotgunning, you're probably not able to tell the differences. My advice would be to buy yourself a cheap O/U, something like a Lanber, or Bettinsoli or similar. 6-700 quids worth of gun that you won't lose a lot if anything on when you sell it, and go shooting for 6 months or so. Learn how to shoot a bit and THEN, go and try a few other guns, find something that feels right (and you will) and then maybe, spend a bit more.

Don't even go there! I trashed and destroyed Mk1 and 2 RS1800, 2000's's, Mexicos and Sports in numbers I can't now recollect. If they weren't pounded into the scrap yard then they were wrapped around trees, lamposts and on one occasion a Police car...that went down well! Their value now doesn't bear thinking about...then add on the Turbo Technics Capri, the Mk 2 Cortina Savage and a sprinkling of Cosworths and it gets really depressing!

Definitely for Bass in settled conditions, but up and over high in the dark after a big blow....for monsters. Nearly all of my big Bass have come on baits, at night after a hoolie! Had lots of good singles on lures, but I think all of the doubles were on baits in the surf. When I used to fish for carp the best fish were nearly always pre dawn or the first couple of hours of the day too.

Indeed, pushing 130 was the most I saw. Not that quick after all

If it's all private land/road and you have the landowners permission to shoot over it then it's no different to walking down a farm track with a shotgun, ie no issues. That said, IIRC correctly, you don't legally HAVE to slip a shotgun anyway. EDITED to add the following snippet I found. It’s covered by Section 19 of the Firearms Act: Read more at http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/shootingadvice/533724/What_does_the_law_say_about_carrying_a_shotgun_in_public.html#hhSBjoVyreLzTzmG.99 A person commits an offence if, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, he has with him in a public place, a loaded shotgun or loaded air weapon....... So, not loaded no offence in a public place. Private land if you have permission, no offence. If you haven't permission then surely that then becomes armed trespass.

He's going to kill himself driving like that! Speed kills you doncha know! Needs a quickshifter!
-
But jeez that is the cheap and nasty end of the range. Wouldn't instill confidence in me.
-
Saved me typing a similarly disparaging response. Driver skill comes into it, but so does the kit you are using.

We're still catching Bass on soft plastics in Sussex at the moment. Smaller fish than they have been but I managed dinner for yesterday evening. Got to agree with Kent regarding the mono/wire debate, would suggest a plastic coated wire rather than plain wire though on the grounds of fish welfare though....although quite how this became a debate about leaders for pike, when the OP said he was going bassing of clean beaches, I'm not quite sure!

Last time I was there it was a procession of long crossers, sounds like it may have changed a bit. Shooting Northall this weekend, could maybe do the week after if it's on?
-
Pretty much agree with all of the above, personally I use braid connected to 20lb mono, it improves presentation and gives better abrasion resistance.
-
I'm sure it will be very nice when they get around to finishing it. Not for me though thanks, don't care how accurate it is!
-
Go on then, I'll roll with that one. Means test them and if they don't earn enough elsewhere they can have the increase.
-
I'm not going to get into the argument about leaders here, suffice to say, the only leader I use for lures is when I'm fishing braid (most of the time), in which case it has a 60cm mono leader. It's more snag resistant and improves presentation. However, I wouldn't dream of using a main line for two seasons, let alone 3! Mono degrades in sunlight, not to mention all the rubbing and little nicks it picks up. I re-spool the reels every year be it braid or mono. They do get quite heavy use though. What are you intending to catch? It does make a difference.

I don't mind a few long ones, just not on every bloody stand! Variety is the spice of life....and an interesting clay shoot!
-
I'll join you on that one. Been doing it too long and its no longer challenging. Trouble is it pays too well and though I'd like to change, I can't afford the massive wage drop re-training would entail.

Anyone shot Caterham clay ground recently, if so, is it any better? Last time I shot it, it was long crossers, followed by long crossers, followed by really long crossers....etc, etc. So, is it any better now? I want to have another option but I'd rather not waste my money on a ground full of samey stands.

Still wasn't speed though . I'm bored with this now, Mr risk averse aka Munzy has taken the fun out of it by banging the drum so repeatably that even I can't be bothered to bite again.
-
Ah yes, it is actually Lithium Ions in the new Makitas, this is what I have. NiMh are what me rechargeable batteries for the remote controls are.

If you believe that speed alone kills then you'd best go join the queue with 'some folk'. I saw a seemingly innocuous car crash in the summer. Rear end shunt pushed a stationary car into the vehicle in front. Speed of impact? 30 or less. The elderly lady in the stationary car must have been in an odd position when the car hit, because somehow her neck broke, killing her. It wasn't speed that killed her. Logically it's not the speed that kills, otherwise I'd be dead and so would you after your adrenaline ride at speed. Walker and Rodas died as a result of the impact which was probably because Rodas made a mistake, or something failed. It was aggravated by the speed they were probably doing, but almost certainly not caused by it.
