  1. I've got one that looks practically identical! A Waltham, built 1914. My grandfather's which accompanied him through WW1 and in use until his death.
  2. Read a thing recently about the large scale import of slaves to the Middle East. The reason the area doesn't have evidence via their descendants? They were all male and castrated on arrival. The piece was accompanied by a photograph from the end of the 19th century showing the result that I wish I hadn't seen. They wouldn't be able to pee standing up any more...
  3. Glad to hear it's sorted out. Just FYI, I've washed my cap on a gentle wash, no spin and it was fine. Smelt much more fragrant.
  4. Worked with a chap who wouldn't eat anything that he couldn't look in the eye and say 'I'm going to eat you'. Pretty much restricted him to fish and fowl.
  5. Pretty sure that every clay ground I've visited has a 2 cartridges only rule. I was told many years ago of a group like the one described with a semi (forgotten where it was). One removed a good part of his foot after being handed the gun when three cartridges loaded and two fired and he rested the muzzle on his foot while fiddling with the trigger. Not so much the shot going through the top of the boot, more a case of it hitting concrete and bouncing back. I couldn't vouch for the truth of it, but it's the sort of thing that could happen. Also demonstrates that you can't legislate against stupidity.
  6. Got a card from an in-law with a lovely photo of a badger in the snow on the front. Turned it over to see who produced it to find it was sold by the League Against Cruel Sports. Oh well...

    KRANKING

We had a Ford Popular (old style one) when I was a child. Terrible thing. If it rained, water would get around the door seals and onto the rear seat passengers (me, generally).
  8. Yes, I was a bit baffled about the 'processing'. Also raised an eyebrow at the opening comments which suggested offence at having her hair moved to see a name badge. The closing comments about the important thing being the women and girls affected by domestic violence (couldn't agree more) derailed to my mind by the rest of the interview describing how offended she felt.
  9. I heard the offended lady being interviewed this morning. She said Lady H had attempted to clarify by saying her people came from France (she was born Waldegrave, which sounds a bit French), so I think Lady H was trying, in a clumsy way, to find out where offended lady's family originated from. Having said that, you'd think that as someone involved in talking to people on behalf of the sovereign she'd be a bit more sensitive.
  10. Westley of course perfectly capable of responding himself, but I think it's because of the danger associated with mixing up live cartridges and snap caps. A variation on the 12 and 20 bore cartridges in the same pocket.
  11. Yes, I was wondering whether the perpetrators were primarily rifle shooters.
  12. Me too! That's why the clang of a firing pin meeting nothing makes me shudder.
  13. Admiring a fine 1930s English boxlock on Saturday. When resleeving, the owner pulled the triggers on empty barrels to ease the springs. Not the first time I've seen this done. I'd never do this because of the damage it may cause, but that set me wondering what harm it can do. Anyone come across anything?
  14. I sold a gun to Graham. Thoroughly nice man and a pleasure to deal with.
  15. Small driven day yesterday where non toxic compulsory. I got hold of some Eley Grand Prix Traditional Steel and started the day fearing runners. I was surprised how effective they were, with birds dead in the air. Gun next to me also using them and doing very well. Forgot I was using steel after the first drive.
  16. Interesting. In case anyone else is wondering, green iguanas are non-native species in Florida and cause all sorts of problems, I've just read. Can be killed with land owner's permission.
  17. Popped into my local for cartridges a while ago. It was quiet, so had a play with some of the more interesting stock, an interesting lecture on bar-in-wood guns, picked up a can on Browning Leggera (sp?) cleaning oil half price because the top was missing and got my cartridges cheaper than at most places. You don't get that online.
  18. Couldn't afford the hands free option on his BMW apparently.

    Dambusters

Just yesterday finished reading 'Chastise', the book about the mission by Max Hastings. Guy Gibson not that nice a character, which I expected. Well worth a read.
  20. Got a right and left at driven partridges today. First in an embarrassing number of decades and fast birds, so I am dead chuffed. Seemed boastful to regale the other guns at the time and Mrs T has less than zero interest, so I'm telling you lot.
  21. That's very kind of you Westley. We're in the south east unfortunately. I've got a stock extender and I'll give that a try.
  22. I thought that too, but definitely in his shoulder.
  23. My son-in-law does the occasional clay bashing with me and I lend him my ancient 686. He's getting a nasty bruise on his shoulder which I think is down to him being tall and moving the stock up to his cheek to compensate, which results in the toe giving him a dig. Even happens with 21g cartridges. Has anyone tried a slip on comb raiser? He doesn't shoot enough to justify anything permanent or semi-permanent which would mark the woodwork. I like the 686 and don't want to replace it.
