  1. 30 to 40yrs or more ago when I had a lot of shooting in the Welsh Hills I carried my Army & Navy 16 gauge side by side, today it would be my Yilditz 30 inch barreled 410. The fact that the cartridges are half the weight as well makes a big difference over 5 or 6 hrs walking those Welsh hillsides. Both would do the job equally well, be it woodcock over pointers , rabbits out of laid bracken in Feb/March, snipe any time and the occasional grouse. Llangattock, Aberedw, and that huge walk into the moor between Abergwesyn and the Elan Valley, sleapt well after those days.
  2. Yep, we need to persuade others to join in and add thyeir results.
  3. I cannot fathom this one because you have an older gun and I have a 2yr old gun and they both suffer from the same problem. With mine I was thinking that tolerances with CNC etc etc had got that little bit finer, if thats the word. Mine is only VERY occasional and a tap on the ejectors releases the cartridge no problem ....once last season and once this season. It's the need for a push to get some shells to chamber where others just drop in and I have the same experience. It has got now that I run all my shells through the gun before a days shooting just in case.
  4. Need more information as above. I have a Yilditz 410 O/U ...brilliant little gun. The chambers on that are tight and I have had maybe three stickers in two seasons. Some cartridges just drop in (Fiocchi) others I have to gently push in (Hull High Pheasant) both excellent cartridges. More info please. An old gun of that age should not be tight certainly. Have you tried Eley ? That is all I shoot in my 100 plus year old Army & Navy 16 gauge and no problems. I think it is likely the cartridges than the gun.
  5. Had a large cast iron range in our farmhouse back in the 40s and 50s....I was born in 1940 and without doubt my crib was set beside that range because it was the only warm place in the three storey farm house. My grandmother turned out the most fantastic food from the two ovens and I can see her in my minds eye now, gently scraping the embers into one corner of the fire, just to get the temperature right for the victoria sandwich she had in there and my mouth starts watering to this day. Amazing what women produced from those stoves back then and banked up with a mix of coal and coke it would still be in next morning. Our back door was never locked and not a surprise to find the loacl bobby warming his feet whilst waiting to make his Point with the Sergeant outside our gate at midnight. Ours was fired with coal and coke. We had a gas works 3 miles away in Tamworth, Staffs and coke was readily available. It was between the river and the railway line/viaduct, Amington turn. Definitely the good old days.
  6. I walked in to the Silware shop and said I wanted a PCP to add to my TX200. The owner turned took the one you see off the rack and gave me the price, it was second hand but like new. I have not been disappointed. Cracking little rifle and small enough in size to move about in a hide with ease. Earned it's keep in 2018 for sure.
  7. Put it down to expeirence...order your favorite pint and always stand with your backside warming against it. You don't have to light it or clean it but you can still enjoy it and may even get the odd pint in consolation as to relate the story.
  8. It takes skill and has to be accepted...Happy New Year to you Sir Ditchman.
  9. New 2019 return list is not yet up but need to enter the first three for me this morning, number one at 8.42am. 4997 to go
  10. Yep, it ain't that much cheaper but a lot of satisfaction from loading your own.
  11. Thanks prem1234 I'm useless at putting those links on.
  12. Yep, agree with above comments. Think it is very mean not to give some return for your efforts BUT if your happy and enjoying life so be it.
  13. Certainly plenty to start on. Let's see a few once they are full.
  14. The Daily Mail has an article, very much anti shooting game bird/hunting based, on the Duchess of Cambridge out pheasant shooting after Christmas, she has her own 20 bore, blasting birds from the sky, words to that effect. Always admired this smart lady ....OHH! and they also report that the new royal member Megan isn't really a vegan and did not stop Harry going shooting blah blah blah.
  15. Spot on. I just ignore such and move on. IF the new poster is genuinley interested in joining in the forum activities he/she will come up again, if not in my view they are just using the site for their own ends. I am a moderator on another forum and we occasionally get one shot wonders trying to sell goods, services and hunting. Very easy to spot and they disappear very quickly.
  16. .....and a self made billionaire and President of the most powerful nation on earth. If that is your judgement of people, heaven knows what you think of the majority in Westminster and Brussels.
  17. Choices, choices and more choices .... I think the present thread based around the upgrade of Opinel knives has to be on the shortlist along with the linisher thread. You have to give it to the man, he can stretch a thread better than most.
  18. Certainly Hull cases appear to be good ones. RC 410s I have found less so BUT as with many things the proof of the pudding etc., Try and use the same make/style cases, simple as that.
  19. My wife said she could not remember me last having a cold but my diary tells me it was almost exactly this week Jan 3rd 2018 !!! I normally shrug 'em off but this one has kept me grounded BUT don't tell the tree rats but I think I might be well enough to sneek out tomorrow
  20. Nice report Scully ....wouldn't it be boring if you knew you could hit everything?
  21. I second what figgy just said, a spinner is well worth the money it puts a good finish on the crimp. A bench drill stand is easiest but doesn't have to be a posh one. One with a drill mounted will work fine. I load all my 410s now and even after putting real nice crimps, the 'nose' of the cartridge is still a bit tight to go in the chamber and the spinner has solved that completely and a big help with 410s which are just that bit trickier to drop in the chamber than 12s or even 20s but even for your 12s it will just finish the job nicely. Two important things ...don't rush the job and do it alone with no outside interference and that way you shouldn't make a mistake. on edit....be ruthless in chucking any shells which have slight cracks or are not perfect, do this after you have de primed before priming.
  22. Now we are on the subject...anybody got any they can't cope with
  23. Brilliant....I'm here sniffing and coughing and sneezing and that has made my day....thank you. I await other awards ... such as SSWS ....Sir, Squirrel whackerstacker
