  1. It doesn't but you can assume as such with thermal and NV being modern tools of the trade. NV provides a pretty clear image of what your shooting at whereas one is more likely to misuse thermal, shoot through hedges, cover etc.. It's not difficult to envisage a scenario in which someone who has become complacent and has taken risks previously by shooting at heat signatures through hedges, reeds etc can mistake a partial signature of a person for that of a fox. More so that if the person thought they were on the path to be the hero that shot a fox as it was preying on a birthing calf. It just highlights the requirement for us to check ourselves every now and then and remind ourselves that rifles aren't playthings and there is no rewind button. Once that trigger is pulled there is no recalling that shot and there is no do-over. If you're able to shoot with the mindset that if you **** up then you're in for a lot of trouble and that it's always better to not take a questionable shot and be able to talk about the one that got away rather than talk of regret of pulling that trigger. But that can sometimes be lost in the heat of the moment.
  2. Gun fit in that case. Also a gun should come to you and not you to the gun when mounting. I had similar with a low combed Beretta which meant my right eye was being partially blocked by the back of the action with my left eye taking over to compensate. The action was only slightly impeding the view of my right eye but it was enough to cause the left eye to take over. It took a visit to a gun fitter to pick this up. He then bent the stock to provide a higher comb and the issue disappeared. You'll probably find that you're lifting your head from the stock slightly when shooting in the field to get a better/ correct view. When mounting to a mirror you'll be making a conscious effort to do it properly which is then causing the issue because the comb is too low. If the O/U has an adjustable comb then raise it a little and check again, rinse and repeat until you get the right result. If you do raise the comb then you'll be seeing a lot more rib than the relatively flat shooting Venza S/A and your sight picture will change. You'll need to spend some time shooting clay targets to get used to keeping the target above the bead rather keeping it in line with your barrels. In any case you should be shooting a shotgun rather than aiming it but it will still take some getting used to.
  3. If true then that's tragic and really does highlight that they aren't toys and users shouldn't just be shooting at heat signatures without first being 100% of what they are shooting at. Better it gets away for next time than potentially losing it all and spending a few years behind bars.
  4. I would assume that there is no requirement for new builds to be covered in solar as this would remove the need for them to supplied with (as much) electricity commercially. Despite the almost cult like following that Net Zero seems to have by government I'm sure there is still a lot of lobbying going on to ensure that no matter what the energy companies still get their big fat slice. It would also be hard for government to tax self generated energy and I imagine that a government applying a tax to those who are going with the narrative simply because the government is otherwise losing out on income wouldn't be very popular. Having pre-installed solar and battery storage facilities in all new builds going forward would go some way towards lessening our need for industrialised energy production and also go some way towards solving the issue that is the limited grid capacity we have.
  5. I would have thought it obvious that the Net Zero requirements would mean that vast swathes of the countryside would be turned over to solar to enable those goals to met. It either wasn't figured or isn't cared that the result of that policy would mean that food production would be off shored as a result. Low market rates for produce and ever decreasing subsidies have ensured that farmers are left with little choice but to diversify with green energy being one of the better paying and zero risk options. We only have so much land and we have to choose between growing food or generating energy. Parts of the land on which our game syndicate takes place are due to have solar panels installed meaning that no shooting will take place during the installation and any shooting after will be limited to areas that aren't near to the solar panels. It's quite concerning (to shooters only obviously) as they are due to be installed on the better parts of the shoots where all of the pens and drives are currently located. I'm not sure why off shore solar hasn't become as popular as off shore wind. Millions of acres of the surface of the water in UK territorial waters that are just sat there doing nothing. The installations would need to be quite robust and designed for off shore use but it can be done and should be done in preference to turning over farmland from food to energy production.
  6. That's completely at odds with my experience of the Gamebore Black Gold Dark Storm Steel 4's. I use a 36g HP 3's on the foreshore which seems to do the job just about. If I could get a HP 3 in 36g with a biowad for a reasonable cost I would use them for driven game shooting also.
  7. Fishing is almost certainly in the cross hairs. NRW have been attacking and removing rights and permissions from Salmon anglers for some time now. NRW are constantly meddling in what can be stocked and where. There is also a growing anti-fishing sentiment here. My local country park lake (which has nothing of any worth in it except for some miniscule trout and 100 tons of Canadian pondweed) recently had a lot of no fishing signs erected by a do-gooder local to the park. Completely separate from any type of park or council authority. Another park lake locally banned fishing over 15 years ago following pressure from anti-fishing locals. Shame as that had a really strong head of decent sized carp and other coarse fish in it. Another local lake which is on an abandoned industrial site was stocked with carp and coarse fish as a part of the clean up of the site. It's technically trespassing to fish on the site as it's owned by the coal board but it's never been enforced and the EA used to frequent the site and check for rod licenses. In the past few years anti-fishing people who live near to the lake have been aggressively engaging with the police to act on the trespass and remove anglers from the lake, a local bird watching (packham type) leading the charge. When shooting is gone, fishing, horse racing and greyhound racing will follow. Shortly after that will be green laning, MX riding, mountain biking and horse riding. There seems to be a massive part of the population in Wales with the mindset that anything they do not partake in shouldn't be allowed and the government are all too happy to lap this up to ensure their share the vote.
  8. I think that for firearms licensing to be truly efficient, it needs to privatised with the Police being asked to supplement criminal records in some shape or form. A private company would have a financial and contractual obligation to adhere to agreed SLAs. It would cost a bit more but I'm sure many would prefer to pay an additional fee to ensure they are provided with a reasonable level of service with actual timescales for grants, renewals and variations. It's also more likely that a private company would not be politically motivated and can be consistent in their approach across the UK. There are three separate police force areas within South Wales. All have a differing approach (as well as timescales) to how new grants are approved, what calibres are permitted and each are at odds with each other. Depending on post code you could get an initial grant for a .22LR and .223 centrefire, a grant for .17 HMR only or a grant for .17 HMR and .223 but with a mentor condition. If you live in one force area but have permission to shoot in another and have a closed ticket, you have 0% chance of any force area granting a certificate on land outside of their area that hasn't been previously surveyed and approved by that particular force. My particular force did not have access to the records of the other forces, had not surveyed any land since prior to 2019 and had a 2 year wait list before they'll even consider checking it out via OS maps much less actually visit in person and provide any sort of approval. As it stands the police have no desire to handle firearms licensing and most would rather see the population disarmed completely. They simply don't have the inclination to improve as the faster they work through the backlog then the more license holders they have on file and more work involved with renewals, variations etc. There no penalties for poor performance and no comeback on chief constables who preside over forces that are the lowest ranked. As we saw with D&C it takes a death before anyone outside even notices there is an issue. Even then it just caused the complete shutdown of all licensing activities in that force.
  9. If you've ever worked with or for the government, civil service or one of their bodies then you'd know just how quickly costs can spiral out of control for even the simplest of tasks. Where there is even the slightest of administration to be done you can almost guarantee that there's a modestly paid admin person to do the 8 hours worth of work in 40 hours (possibly two for when the one goes on long term sick), a supervisor to look after them, a manager to manage them and a director to direct them. Possibly even a very high paid consultant for them to consult with.
  10. They cannot in any possible way raise any sort of money from increasing the cost of gun licensing. They may just about get to a point where the cost of a certificate breaks even for the more competent and efficient police forces. It's a just soundbite thrown into that statement to ensure that anyone listening knows that Labor will be going after guns and shooting should they win at the next general election. These interviews are usually quite short and politicians are well versed in getting as much in to as little time and vice versa if the interview isn't going well for them. Make no mistake, the conservatives have been bad for shooting during their tenure but should Labor get even a sniff of power then you can wave goodbye to shooting as you know it. They aren't the labor of the Blair era and times have changed regarding the hate for anything shooting related. Any competent presenter would have picked up on that and dug further into it. Even a lay person could figure out quite quickly that unless they propose a charge of over £25k per certificate then there is no way that paying for Labor's dreamworld can be done via the less than 100k firearms and shotgun holders that currently exist in the UK. A layperson would likely number the amount of certificates in the whole of the UK at less than 30k total.
  11. I'm very surprised that you haven't yet been inundated with calls. It's likely the clash with beaters day that means that most who have a working dog and gun but don't get the chance to shoot are already engaged elsewhere. If it were not for my own beaters day and you were a tad closer I would have taken you up on it. Very generous of you to offer on an open forum given the hush hush nature of free sporting opportunities these days. You could well offer this out on the beaters and pickers up page on Facebook and see if there is anyone available who perhaps wasn't offered a beaters day this year.
  12. Dogs fine and probably won't even remember the incident in a few days much less be damaged goods because of it. Ditchman is right in what he's saying. You should probably curb the excessive interacting with the kids until such a time that the dog knows what it's purpose is, has a level of training under it's belt and the kids are aware of what is expected of them given that the dog is a part time pet and working dog. Near pointless trying the train the dog if the kids are going to be throwing balls, chew toys etc about the place while your not around. Nothing wrong with having a well rounded and adjusted dog but it's very easy to go too far and end up with a dog that just wants to **** about and isn't interested in working.
  13. Only when I see Rishi gearing up for a stint on the front line will I ever even consider signing up or being conscripted. A couple years in prison would be preferable to be murdered on a battlefield for rich men with small ***** and big egos.
  14. We don't have the luxury of not having to worry about the proofing of cartridges and guns and the limitations that come with that. Steel would probably be just as effective as lead if we could push them at over 1800 FPS but right now we are limited something silly like 1400 fps with limits on load and shot size for a standard rated steel cartridge in a 2 and 3/4 inch case or 70mm case. A bismuth cartridge will be well over £1.50 per shot vs around £0.30 - £0.45 for a lead equivalent and £2.50+ for a tungsten or ITX cartridge.
  15. I'm not sure on the angle of your comment but yes, that would be correct. More birds, more shots and therefore more cost. I'm sure someone who is able to spend multiple thousands on a days shooting has a lot more disposable income and is less likely to become as perturbed by having to spend an extra £60 per slab of cartridges as I would be spending an extra £60 for a single slab of cartridges but the thought process is similar. If the more well off shooter was previously happy with an Eley VIP or something similar for £90-£100 per slab then why would they not be less happy to pay £45-£55 more per slab for a cartridge that is less effective, not really that great to shoot through their grandads heirloom Purdy or other lightweight game gun and with the possibility that the biowad could fail and render their very expensive guns relatively valueless without expensive rebarreling work. Whether it adds £200 to the cost of a £2.5k day or £60 to the cost of a £900 syndicate place is irrelevant. The scale remains roughly the same.
  16. It's starting to become a little 'boy who cried wolf' scenario. The one time that we do have a weather warning that needs to be highlighted as a genuine danger to life situation or 1 in 100 year event, people will just assume it's another useless warning and perhaps they should just pack the patio furniture away and carry on as normal. Perhaps I didn't pay too much attention but in recent years it seems that we have at 2-3 named storms and accompanying weather warnings a month in the winter. I can't recall that being the case outside of the last 2 years or so.
  17. I started this season with the aim of making the switch to completely non-toxic for all of my game shooting this year. I already used HP steel for wildfowling so why not make the switch full time? A few observations I have made: (Warning, anecdotal evidence ahead) 1. It's incredibly expensive, a slab of 32g Gamebore Dark Storm Steel running at £145 when purchased at the end of last season. I don't buy the 'You're spending £1000's on a days shooting so a few extra £'s for a box of cartridges isn't the end of the world' **** pushed on us. The most I've ever paid for a days shooting is £250. I do not and cannot frequent 400 bird days at £5k+ per peg. I'm shooting on a small syndicate shoot with the total cost for the entire season being less than £1000. The additional and upfront cost of really expensive cartridges does add on. Near enough an extra £6 per box compared to a 30g lead 6 cartridge which is more than adequate for our shooting. The 3" Dark Storm alternative are near £190 for 250 or £0.75 per shot. 2. The 2 3/4" standard rated steel as mentioned above are nowhere near as effective as the lead alternative. I've had quite a few birds hit fairly hard (puff of feathers and all that on impact) with a steel cartridge only for it to continue to fly on and be a pain to retrieve as its still a fairly strong runner. I've opened up the birds after the pellets just don't seem to be very far into the bird. I've breasted a few Mallard out to find the steel pellets sat up against the breast bone just under the breast meat. Similarly with pheasants with very little penetration. Those ducks tend to come down onto a pond and require a team of dogs to retrieve it while it submarines about the place. A complete pain in the *** and not fair on the bird. Very little of what we shot is more than 40 yards away as the terrain on the ground doesn't produce 'high birds'. I know steel can be effective on wildfowl when in HP 3" or 3.5" format but the standard steel isn't cutting it. I used some 3" HP steel on the last syndicate day duck drive and spent half hour picking up the plastic wads when the drive was done. Until such a time that our proof specs are changed in line with the higher speed requirements for steel shot to be effective and the manufacturers and retailers start letting them out at a reasonable cost then I'll return to lead until such a time that it is no longer lawfully permitted. I'm not particularly happy with the current offerings and we need an alternate solution. Paying £1.50 - £2+ a shot for bismuth or ITX isn't a valid solution for the vast majority of users.
  18. I've added my name to the notify list again this afternoon. I've been waiting for these to come back into stock for a while so I'm disappointed to have missed them again.
  19. I'd avoid the purpose made slimming shakes. They are just expensive whey protein powder, sweetener and artificial flavoring and very rarely contain anything else beneficial other than perhaps some multi vitamin powder. I'd go down the route of calorie counting via an app and limiting processed foods. Many apps are available with MyFitnessPal being my preferred. Cut out almost everything with Birdseye or Iceland written on it and also anything pre-prepared which can be cooked in an air frier. Focus on non processed alternatives like meat, rice, potatoes, vegetables etc. Protein shakes can form a part of this method but ensure that you read the nutrition table and ensure you are getting the least calories for your 30g or so of dry powder. Some powders aimed at gaining mass can be in the 100's of calories per serving. Low weight, high rep weight training focused on upper body to avoid your injury will also be beneficial. If you've never trained before then it would be worth paying for a few hours one off with a PT so you can be sure your form is correct and your maximising the benefits from your training without risking aggravating your injuries.
  20. Saw one in Dublin back in the summer who was quite good. She was playing covers of EDM songs using a Cello, Violin and a Cajon Drum with a mixing foot peddle to switch between the instruments and relay one over the other. Also singing a mixture of her own and original lyrics over the top. Quite a one dimensional act but certainly UK talent show quality. On the whole though they sometimes quite dire. I do admire their courage as playing an instrument and singing in front of a crowd certainly isn't something I have the talent or balls to do. Anyone who frequented Cardiff's Queen street in the last 10 years will be familiar with Toy Mic Trev who was famous for butchering hits through a fake, childs toy microphone. He must have been quite a character to have done that for well over a decade.
  21. Looks to have been edited after the fact. As always, too far to make it worth it. Good luck OP. If the superlights haven't sold by Tuesday 23rd then I'm in the area for work and can do a deal.
  22. Can you share a location? I would be potentially interested in the 21g cartridges.
  23. When footfall drops and people shoot less then the result will be a drop in cartridge sales and subsequent price increases to account for the lower volume of manufacturing. It's seems to be a spiraling circle that only the manufacturers can control. They'd do well to keep control of their pricing and take a short term hit to secure their future. The current financial situation will end and people will start spending again but only if they aren't faced with their chosen club cartridge being over £350 per thousand.
  24. Seems like the shot is graded to remove the useful and valuable smaller shot sizes and the standard 7.5 gets whatever is left over. I opened up a Fiocchi TT1 a little while back and what should have been a 28g 8 shot had anything from 8's to 3's in it just like your white gold cartridge. Though the TT1 is a bargain basement cartridge so I wasn't expecting perfection. Didn't Gamebore change the white gold to the rose gold shortly after dropping the Gordon recoil system? Perhaps you had a late batch with any old trash thrown in. Unacceptable either way. Also potentially dangerous for clay grounds that have fallout areas designed for a maximum of 7.5 shot as the 3 shot could potentially travel beyond this and out of the bounds of the clay ground.
