henry d
Shot this on the Tay this morning, a first for me with steel, and when the dog retrieved it I could see it wasn`t what I thought.
henry d
As you can see it is feathered across the body like a duck yet the head and throat have drake characteristics First thoughts were that it is a hybrid but then I thought it could easily be a hermaphrodite due to the oestrogen released into the river from the contraceptive pill ? MM
deffo a duck that H. What type though? try having a look at the down, see if they are similar shape as mallard. Bet it tastes nice.
henry d
It is a Mallard, but could it be a duckdrakeladyboy thingummybob or just a hybrid/mongrel cross with a local park pond duck ?
Chard
I think it's what the twitchers call "eclipse" plumage : Here
henry d
Nah, it`s not eclipse, I`ve shot enough of those (and the odd flapper ) to know the difference, it is fully feathered and I can`t find any "sheathed" feathers
al4x
big question then Henry is are you going to eat it and risk the Moobs getting more pronounced
malkiserow
Check to see if it has 6 fingers - Did it fly up from Suffolk by any chance ? LOL
MC
I shoot several like that a year as my flight pond is about 1/2 mile from Abberton Resevoir and I get all kinds of hybrids on there. Pluck it cook it with a nice plum or orange sauce and you will never know the difference.

v-max
Think you have a mallard cross farm yard duck with the white comming out in it. It also looks as tho with the cross it has had its gender mixed to & is neither duck nor drake just a bit both. You see it in pheasants odd times we call the a jennywilox. Whitebridges
Heinz 57 variety. A cross-bred. Should taste absolutely fine.

tikkamark
Is that not just a young mallard drake that doesn't have its fully developed plumage yet?
Highlander
'farm yard' duck. We get plenty of those on one of our ponds but they fly just as well as the wild ones and in the semi dark you can't tell the difference. I think they call louder, hoarser and more readily which might help bring in the wild stock Enjoy 'cause even if it is full of hormones at your time of life does it really matter

alexr
Where abouts on the Tay did you shoot it Malc. I’ve seen mallards like this up at Aberfeldy, ( Moness way if I remember right ). I always thought they were crosses, though I could never work out what with. There are wild mallards in the hotel grounds, but also muscovies and domestics. Obviously its not a cross with a muscovy, but god knows what else it might be with. Here’s a web site http://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/domducks.htm All the best
