Cranfield
I had an Advent laptop for 3 years and then passed it on to my Daughter and its still going strong, with heavy use. The make was recommended to me by a friend in IT.

Sergeant
I'm doing Information systems and managment, theres a fair bit of web related stuff, website design etc, along with report writing. It would be good if it could do a bit of everything, but im not too bothered about game performance.
tenbears10
What about an iBook? You get the top spec 14 inch for £899 now and you get a discount if you are a student.
muppet
I would fine out what spec you want then look around at prices. A superb value for money site I use is www.ebuyer.com but it's worth shopping around anyway.
Axe
Personally I would look at either the Toshiba range or Hewlett Packard. Both are very good quality products and hard wearing! So when ya get back to the dorm after having a night on the tiles with ya student buddies and you happen to collapse, it might fair well. Seriously though, they both come with fantastic support. HP even offer a next day collection, if you ever need it. The one thing I would say, is stay away from Dell, their service and support is a waste of time and the products are well lets just say inferior. I have known several people with thier laptops, all of which have fallen to bits. Shame really as they seem quite good until soimething goes wrong and then your left up the swanny without a paddle. Sorry to those who have one, its just my opinion. Regards, Axe.
hawkeye
I agree with AXE i had a Hewlett Packard with work, good reliable laptop i then changed about 2 years ago and got a Toshiba Satellite 3000-X11 that is great only used it for approx 6 months then retired been sat on the floor in the dinning room ever since just opened up and switch on working a treat paid £1100 for it to sell now would get next to nothing for it.Decided to use it for Photo's and as back up for main PC. Hardy
Put's work hat on rather than fun! Dell's have come on a lot in the last few years. They used to have huge issues on build quality & service but they seem to have patched that up now & seem ok. The last 2 laptops I bought were Dell's. From a personal perspective I favour the Toshiba's - the Satalite Pro range. I've had had quite a few problems with Tecra 8000 & 9000's so Id avoid those. Depending where you are the Morgan Computers proces are pretty keen - they may not be the latest spec but not far off http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/. One thing to bear in mind when comparing specs is the the intel centrino's are risc processors so do not directly compare with the speed of P4's (ie a 1.8 centrino is streets faster than a 1.8P4 would be)
Whitebridges
Whatever you do, do not go to PC World. Good luck. B)
