Blackbart
Went to the gunshop yesterday and bought a couple of boxes of ammo only to find since xmas they have went up from £16.75 a box to £25.50 Why ?? The answer i got was "everything has went up" which doesnt explain anything. This reloading mullarky is looking more attractive all the time. What does it work out at per round for 22-250 and 243 ? And can you reload the winchester silver brass/zinc or whatever it is cartridges ?As i already have a couple of hundred of them.

After you have bought your gear, it works out at about £0.60p a round and yes you can reload that brass (i use it).
Vario
I have just bought a 22-250 reloading kit, £27 a box for Fedral 55g soft point is mad.... so im going down the reloading path too. As said above, it works out at about 0.60p a round, and you have the ability of tayloring the round to your specific needs/gun. Blackbart
The bullets i have been using are great in my gun so the need for reloading has not been an issue but a £9 increase per box is definately starting to sway me. Vario
I was paying £19.50 for a box of Fedral 22-250 soft point 55gr (20 in a box) in january, now its nearer £27.

Vince Green
Ammo components have gone up a lot too and the supply situation can be anything from erratic to absolutely dire. Remember you can produce good quality ammunition when you reload but its not guranteed. You need to do a lot of testing and experimenting and that costs money. I have suggested this before, try Privi Partisan ammo, there is no guarantee your rifle will like it but if it does you are in clover. Its around £10 for a box of 20 but the dealers hate it because its less profit for them, my local dealer slags it off every time I go in there. Its heavily subsidised but its not rubbish and best of all its not American with all the cost implications. No ammo suits all rifles but in my rifle PP shoots better than Winchester. Its on a par with my reloads. I shoot about 600 rounds a year at all ranges out to 600 yds and I am very suprised at just how good it is. I've given up reloading completely since I latched on to PP. Try some, What have you got to lose? Edited February 18, 2010 by Vince Green

Whay have you got to lose? Same price it costs me to reload now; I did think about buying some now and again to use the brass if it's any good, but a kind soul off here sent me some good brass for free. Probably, as with many RFD, they have an ammo stock that often lasts them through several supplier price rises, so when they eventually re-order they have missed 2 or 3 or 4 price rises, ammo went up a lot last year, but from my experience settled a bit towards the end of the year, so I expect your Massive price rise is the result of this!! Am I assuming £16.75 was for 22-250 or .243, if it was then that was "cheap" Very few centrefires of any calibre about for less than £20 a box these days, except PRVI and Wolf>
Billy.
That's one of the reasons I stopped shooting my 22-250. I went back to my local (Hated) gunshop and I asked for the Federal 22-250's and they said "here you are, that's £24 please." I proceeded to say how I bought 20 of the exact same rounds from them two weeks ago for £14.50. I got laughed at. Not just a chuckle, but he basically pointed and laughed at me and made me look an utter *****. I left without buying anything. I came back the next day and saw the guy who thought I was the local jester: "Is this your price sticker?" "Yes" "How much does it say?" "£14.50" The ***** didn't even have the decency to apologise to me and 'offered' the £24 rounds for £21. I left again without buying any rounds and went to Broomhills and picked them up for £15. al4x
been done the same got charged for 500 cartridges when buying 250 and the guy wouldn't have it. ****** me right off as had to buy them or give up a days driven shooting Been back once since and actually was surprised the price was reasonable for cartridges. Stuteleys in Baldock is far better and run by humans who all shoot so tend to prefer to give them my money, but is a trek from work hence I had to pop in there when I needed some 4's a few weeks back

Dave Reloading there probably isn't much difference between the two. The 223 uses less powder. Around 25grains vs 38 grains in a 22-250. The primers are the same price as are the bullets, brass is cheaper but averaged over five or six reloads it isn't a big difference. I suspect if you could find bulk factory loaded .223 substantially cheaper than 22-250 though. Reloading is a rewarding hobby which allows you to shoot more, but if you think it will save you money think again. It takes quite a while to pay back the outlay in the press and dies plus all the ancillaries.

If you use 400 rounds you will have saved £268 and that should get you a reloading set up,so after 400 rounds you break even and from then on you are saving money.
