Catastrophic rifle failure

I stumped upon this, and I think it's a good example of what happens when a barrel blows up.

This might of happend on a Modern .50 Muzzleloader, but the princable is the same.

Firstly, you can read all about what happened here: http://www.hpmuzzleloading.com/Alert.html

Now, during this story he talks about someone who had a very simular experiance, but wasn't so lucky. If you wish, you can view the pictures of the aftermath here: Graphic LINK Graphic

Discuss.

Despite what he says in the write up I have to say it looks to me like there was something else going on there. that barrel has just disintegrated and bulged badly ripping the metal apart. Thats a considerable over pressure explosion. I would suspect a double charge or a short started bullet causing a detonation. He says in the write up he was talking to someone just before the accident happened, maybe he got distracted.

In his book on muzzle loaders Sam Faldala tries to blow up a muzzle loader and he had to pack the barrel with a massive amount of powder to make it give out like that.

i agree completley with black powder producing low pressures this kinda thing doesnt happen from firing a properly loaded charged musket ball. at the very least he double or even triple loaded it or perhaps used centerfire rifle powder. this is highly unusual. just my 2 cents

Whatever tha cause it certainly makes you think about what can go wrong, especially with poor rifle maintainance!

One of my favourite sayings is: "It is easy to be the cause of a shooting accident, but once it has happened you can not "unhappen" it!"

Considering that being true (which it is), wouldn't it just be more likely to blow up a poorly made barrel, rather than an over-charge?

I'm just a bit suspicious that the big bulge is about 6-8 inches up from the breech. that looks to me like a second charge detonated in the barrel there rather than at the breech face. The effects of pressure occours at the point at which the pressure takes place and to shred the metal in the way it did means it has to have been massive. Not just a stress failure.
