Dunkield
I have been happy using Eley cartridges for some time now, originally VIPs then Superbs, both in plastic 8's As the Superbs are getting low I need to get another thousand, looking at the price I was considering dropping 'down the range' again. I see they do Firsts, Olympics and Blues - so apart from minor difference in velocity, presumably giving a softer feel, what are the actual differences in these cartridges? preferably from people who have shot them? seeker
Firsts work .. seem a bit dirty Olympics work .. seem a bit cleaner
PhilR
Eley First - Muzzle Velocity 1350fps; Observed Velocity 1050pfs with 3% Antinimony. Blues - MV 1400fps; OV 1090fps with 3% Antinimony. Superbs - MV 1450fps; OV 1130fps with 5% Antinimony. VIPs - MV 1480fps; OV 1150fps with 7% Antinimony. This information is taken from my Eley catalogue which may be out of date, there's no listing for Olympics though. I use Superb 7 and 7.5 and VIPs in 24gm 7 and 7.5. I've tried the Blues in both plastic and fibre wads in 7.5 and found them to be good performers with perhaps slightly less felt recoil than the Superbs. I've never shot the Firsts and thought that the Olympics had been superceded by the advent of Superbs and VIPs but stand to be corrected. hillmouse
Firsts and First Lites are my most popular coaching load and I get through hundreds, never had a problem, slightly dirty perhaps. 21 gram loads break clays very, very well indeed. Blues. I have used a case or two myself, no problems encountered and if you put them in the right spot they do the job. Cleaner than Firsts. Dunkield
Olympics are listed as 1400 fps muzzle / 1090 fps observed I will see what they have in stock, I might try the Olympics or Blues based on those replies - thanks

djrwood
Just out of interest what are you paying for the vips? I shoot them in shot size 7.5 28gm and buy them for around 44 per 250 brick. I get them from gun and fish at whaplode. Cheers

Thunderbird
Used both Olympics 7.5s and Blues 9s and yes, excellent cartridges. Also, the Olympic 7.5s 28gm cycle very well in my old Remington 1100 too.

Cheapest i can get them for is £50.50 per 250 or £202 thousand. I have just finished my superbs 28gr 8 and will be going on to olympics. I tried a box each of olympics, pro one, white gold XLR and superbs. My findings were the white gold were cack, superbs were the most punchy but broke the clays the same as olympics and pro one. Olympics were the cheapest by nearly £40 thousand so will be buying a thousand to give them a good try.

apache
I sometimes but Olympics/Firsts but I find them very dirty and takes an age to clean the gun. So much so that I buy them when I feel poor and buy something better quality when I can afford it (have always liked Hull Comp X as a cheap and cheerful cart, Black Gold if I'm feeling flush, but they make a good bang!). Been shooting some odds and **** today and mixed Ely First and Hull Comp X both 28G no 7. I could tell which was which by the amount of **** coming out the gun, and a fraction more felt recoil with the Eley cartridge. I only use felt wads. Kelbrook are doing them for £140/1000 can't get a fibre cartridge cheaper anywhere.

I see they do Firsts, Olympics and Blues - so apart from minor difference in velocity, presumably giving a softer feel, what are the actual differences in these cartridges? preferably from people who have shot them? The difference in cost and performance to a very large degree is the shot. The more expensive cartridges contain high antimony lead in the case of Superbs around 5% against a maximum of 3% in the lower cost cartridges. The more expensive shot also tends to more round, when you add these attributes you get far better patterns. The high antimony shot distorts less and therefore flies truer and produces superior patterns at extended ranges. The rounder shot is also less influenced by air pressure which slows it down so you have better speed and therefore more energy at extended ranges. At average sporting ranges the lower cost cartridge is adequate but at longer ranges and at edge on targets you need better / tighter patterns such as at the fast trap games of ABT UT and OT. You normally get what you pay for, I say normally 'cos it's not always the case. I have a crush tester and have found some shameful examples of poor shot in high priced cartridges. Eley are one of the better ones. On thier budget cartridges loaded in the UK they produce their own shot at the Midlands factory on a short drop system with temper bars of antimony added, this sometimes goes wrong ! On the higher priced cartridges the shot us imported from Europe normally from Spain and is of excellent qualty.

Country Pursuits and Park Street guns is where I've been going. As I am tied up six days a week at the moment, I took the lazy option and got them delivered by Just Cartridges, I know it costs more but so does driving to a decent gun shop, and that is when I have the time. I went for Olympics in 8 for clays and Pigeons in 6.5 (which don't seem to be called HB's anymore?)for the rest
