Was down the permission today with the land manager, he'd seen aload of woodcock on the land and we walked down for a look, as going a bunch of them flew up and spun around, I fired and missed and then dropped one. The manager says its a woodcock and I thought it was aswell until I noticed the beak wasnt very long at all :hmm: Bit worried now!

Any ideas guys ? woodcock.jpg

Is indeed a golden plover....lucky there in season....Shouldn't really be shooting at birds your unsure of.....lucky this time...could quite easily been a protected species.....

yes I do know :( It was honestly mistaken for a woodcock by a newbie! Dont say you've never ever made a mistake.

Been plucked and gutted :good: Will eat it tomorrow :D

yeah it's a Goldie alright, I once shot a woodcock with a short beak just about the size of the beak of your plover, Very rarely will you see more than two or three woodcock flush at once from the same place, three is the most ever I've seen, when you said you saw a whole bunch of them flush my mind went into over drive  good shooting all the same - I hope you let us know how it tasted :good:

wouldn't fancy eating the one they found in county tyrone this week. Full of pesticides apparently. The golden plover is very tasty though.

Looks like someone thought we've enough birds of pray in NI :good: Anyway If it was realised in the South whats to say it wasn't poisoned there and then flew across the border :hmm:
