ive bought a winchester 120 12ga pump action and was just thinking is it possible to be quick enough for shooting clays.where i shoot 2 clays are always in the air at the same time from one trap.so they dont do one at a time.so does any one else here go on the clays with a pump and is it possible to do ?

It took him a while, but my nephew got very fast with his 870,to the extent he had few problems with bolting bunnies(real ones),and you don't always know where they're coming from, let alone going to!With three ferrets down we often got multiple rabbits bolting simultaneously! Great fun! :D

I agree, great fun and something a bit different. I used my Winchester pump on Sunday for the first time at my local clay shoot and managed a 28/50 and that was with hitting 2/10 on first stand then a 3/10 on the second. It was the first time I shot it and took a few shots to get used to it.

Ideally a stand where the clays are on report are more suited but I was still hitting 'pairs' in the air. You just have to make a mental note to 'pump' once the first shot is fired and I was surprised how quickly you can load the next cartridge.

As we all know they are not the ideal choice for Clay shooting but it's like most things in life, the more you practice the better you get (in theory anyway).

You get a few that turn their noses up and frown (get a life!) :P but generally people like to have a look at it and are quite surprised when the clays are getting smashed..

A good friend of mine uses a Winchester pump for clays and shoots just as well with it as his Beretta Auto and is consistantly in the mid 30's/50.

It's all about enjoying your shooting, if I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't go. I enjoy using the pump and it's a bit different :good::yes:

I just bought this beauty and intend to give it a go on clays this saturday so I'll let you know. (I already know it's fast enough for ducks!)

My Supernova has finally battled its way up here today from GMK and i'll be giving it a go on the clays next Sunday, but its mainly for PSG :good:

I really like it. I have an M2 as well, which is lighter and I think a bit quicker but I still rate my Supernova. I bought the SN so I can get into wildfowling. I had a few moments where I forgot to pump out the last cartridge, so I've got into a routine of counting them in AND out.

I often think the chap who came up with the name of this gun must have been watching some old 70's porn movie. Where else would he have been inspired to name it Benelli Supernova. I started to re-name mine Big Ben but on reflection, that's just as bad.

Oh, I was going to ask, did you go for the pistol grip? I am in two minds whether that would suit me better. What did you choose? I suppose the only way to know for sure is to buy one, unless anyone has one for sale on here.

I also have an M2! I'm getting my SN so i can enter the manual divisions of PSG. I agree with the name, i'd prefer just a letter/number name but Benelli must've been having a mad moment!

I've gone for the standard comfortec stock (or at least thats what i ordered - not seen it yet and they've already b0ll0xed it up twice - first time it was camo, second time it was S2  ). I did contemplate the pistol grip stock as i think it will aid with pumping the action but i was told that you have to remove the stock every time you want to take the trigger pack out for cleaning so that put me off straight away!

just a word to the wise mate, i had a mossberg 500 for a while and took it to a well known clayground in our area ( it shall remain nameless) as i took it out of the slip the look on the other guns faces was priceless, you would have thought i was shooting naked. It didnt go down too well and i get the impression pumps are frowned upon on claygrounds, i sold it not long after that, if you attend make sure you have some sort of safety flag to show a round is unchambered and remember to use only two rounds..

I used to get around 80/100 with my Mossberg at Worsley and they weren't particularly easy clays, not all simos though.

Great fun and it's amazing how quick you can get at cranking them when you need to. :good:

Incidentally, I never witnessed any snobbery or people looking down their noses at me. Amusement and a few light-hearted John Wayne comments maybe, but if you take offence at that, you ought to take up knitting. :P

Mungler on here is very good on the clays with a pump, doesn't miss many at all :good:

As mentioned, it's not the ideal gun for clays if you're intending to take clays seriously, but if the clays are just for practice or fun, no problem.

The M2 is lovely, isn't it? My wife was put off when she used O/Us due to the recoil but she loves the M2. Ours happily cycles 21g carts. Both my guns are Comfortec.

I am going to order up a pistol grip stock just to see how it helps with cycling the pump. I did see a good video on youtube put up by a guy who was having trouble getting the trigger assembly out. He solution was to just loosen the stock enough to turn it slightly, not remove it completely.

I have been using the Supernova with 3.5" Magnums, 42g. There's hardly any recoil with the Comfortec stock even using these heavy shells.

I have seen a couple of people "pumping" at clays, I would say a pump is intrinsically as safe or safer than a semi auto which you see a lot of at clay grounds, however a safety flag is a good idea for a pump, semi or anything that cant be broken. I know 99.5% of clay shooters are very safe but i do get nervous around semi's especially when people decide to stand on the path between stands and not in the cages because the sun was in their eyes and then rattle 3 off at a pair!!!

Hi Mark

Congrats on your new purchase :good:

You may be interested to know that some of our american buddy's have come up with a new mod to shorten the stroke of the supernova by almost an inch, I should have it instaled before next season so will let you know how it goes :D

yeah i shoot at clays with a supernova too. great fun, the best score i got was a 34/50. i`m quite fast with it. it doesnt matter what you use to shoot clays,

i did once remember a steward giving me a filthy dirty look, as i was shooting clays. i then proceded to shoot 2 incoming driven clays, as fast an a semiauto.

big cheesy grin time.

i saw an american group shoot at some clays, on a well known clayground next to an american airbase.

picture this....

high clay from a tower is launched away, is more than 50-60 yards

first shooter, bang, bang-bang,..........nothing,

second shooter, bang,bang,bang,bang, bang,...... nothing

-"dont bother with that sonny" -"its un hittable"

- really?

pull. bang, break. with my merkel she`s fast and shoots like a dream. i did have to go to the back trigger though.

they were gobsmacked !
