unless hes fainted died had a medical emergency or is giving life saving treatment to a member of the public i cant think of many other good reasons to leave the shotgun and ammo together

It may have been covered in the boot and hes popped in to the shop for a lotto ticket or pack of fags and some neds broken in? I would have thought he`d taken reasonable precaution if that were the situation and he was away from a locked car for 2-3 mins max?

so where do you keep your ammo and gun when you're out? i know mine are kept in the back of the van or in the boot OUT OF SIGHT, probably like this poor sod.

my point exactly; if i go into a shop on my way home from a shoot I leave them locked in the boot out of site. Also on way to shoot, going into bakers for my piece-locked out of site in boot for a few minutes.

in my eyes a gun and carts should never be left together in a car , and those who do and if the worse happens when there in a shop buying whatever then they deserve what the law throws at them and they should also loose there certs , as this is irresponsible.

not in full view for passers by to see- between 8 and 9 every saturday the bakers/newsagents etc are beseiged by shooters. have never seen anyone carrying their gun-all locked in their boots id guess?

In the car when I'm in it, with me when I'm shooting. Straight in the cabinet when I get home. Why would anybody leave a firearm unattended in the boot of a car?

I know that leaving the gun and cartridges in the car wasn't perhaps the most sensible thing to do, but as far as I am aware it is not illegal. It even says that the gun was dismantled so it may not have been in a gun shaped bag.

Let us not forget though with some of the comments being made here. This guy is not a criminal, he is the victim of a crime. He has had his pigeon shooting equipment stolen by some ne'er do well and his sport ruined. I cannot say any more than that from the facts that are on the BBC website.

When I asked my FEO about this very subject, using the example of nipping in the shop for some fags, he said that, and I quote "when your going to leave in the car boot, even if its out of sight, just drop the foreend off. Then if someone does nick it at least they have an incomplete gun. And, you will have gounds to prove you did take 'reasonable precautions'; locked in the boot, out of sight and an incomplete gun."

Obviously this refers to shotguns, but with a rifle just pull the bolt. Im not moving away from the fact that this bloke is the victim of a crime, but this is a habit I have got in to. I know that the gun was broken down, this could just mean that it was in an ABS case. In whcih case its even easier to just take the forend with you.

Just my 2p worth

Leaving a gun unattended in a car is one thing leaving the ammunition with it is another.

We have had it drummed into us over the years by the Police Authorities that the majority of thefts from cars are “opportunist thefts” so whether it was concealed or not is irrelevant.

Also when you apply for shotgun or firearms certificates it is always reinforced by the FALO and the documentation that under no circumstances should you leave a firearm unattended unless it is in a secure locked safe or cabinet. Im afraid I’ve got no sympathy for the guy or anyone else who may have. The fact is he left it for long enough for it to be stolen and was extremely stupid and will now pay the price.

Some one said "weve all done it" but I can say quite categorically that I havent and never will. No excuses what so ever Im afraid.

so who carries a slab of catridges with them when they leave the gun in the car?

In this case it states the gun was broken down, doesn't say if any component parts were removed to disable it though. With my auto I just take off the screw nut on the end of the forend in the knowledge that if someone stole it and tried to load it it would fall apart. Its also covered and usually has a GWP sitting on top of it so really as far as possible its looked after.

What it also doesn't say is whether it was on private property and there for a proper reason as all these have a bearing on whether you loose your ticket or not

Jesus christ there is some paranoid people on here. So the gun was left in a car? God forbid.

Anyone who says they take their gun and ammo with them if they stop off at a shop isn't fooling anyone. Toy guns do not count here fellas.

Anyone who actually shoots and owns a gun will have left theirs several times.

I know I have. The law says you need to make REASONABLE precautions to keep your guns safe. I would consider being locked in a car for a few minutes reasonable.

Dont leave the gun or the slab of cartridges in the car unattended fullstop broken down or not. In the eyes of the law its a firearm or shotgun which has been stolen, broken down incomplete or whatever it doesnt matter. I dont think the authorities will show any lenency Im afraid. The guy may well have been a victim of theft but also it could be construed he too has been guilty of an offence. The fact that it was unattended illustrates that the guy didnt take "every reasonable precaution"..thats the way the CPS lawyers will look at it.
