kipper
Hi Chaps, Im after some of your advice reccomendations on my 1000 th post . I have delivered my variation to the firearms department today asking for a .243 + Mod. It will be used for fox mainly but some land I shoot on has roe/munty roaming on it and the farmer said we can take the odd 1 or 2 for the table (this is why I decided to go for a .243 instead of .222 or .223 advice received from some of you chaps in an earlier topic) If I get the bug for more deer stalking I will take the DSC course. I quite like the Idea if a synthetic stock with a none reflective stainless barrel with a nice scope sat on top + Mod. (I do like wood but I think the above would suit the hunting climate better) My thaughts are. Tikka T3 or browning X bolt there are some package deals on a web sight I was looking on last night (sportsmangun centre) with the above rifles in .243 win plus a zeiss duralyt 3-12x50 scope + mounts and wildcat or reflex Mod for arround the £1'600 mark, What do you think? Any advice / thaughts would be graitfully received. Thanks in advance Kipper Edited January 12, 2011 by kipper

Devon Fox
Who told you stainless barrels are reflective? they are a sort of powder coat finish and mine doesnt reflect at all and is a doddle to look after! I use a T3 synth & stainless in 243 - owned from new (2/3 Years approx) it shot great from the box, has been reliable, trigger is nice so you do not have to tweek like you do with the next persons suggested rifle ........ Good gun and I dont think there is a lot better at that money

Dekers
For general ease of use/maintenance/cleaning get a T3 Lite Stainless, if you put a moderator on it also consider putting about 100-150g of weight in the butt or it will be front heavy. For use straight out of the box, with good balance, even with a mod, but a bit more maintenance/cleaning (wood and blued) get a T3 Hunter! There are Pros and Cons for both, I have the T3 Lite Stainless in .223 and the T3 Hunter in .243, if I bought another T3 it would almost certainly be a Hunter, but both shoot well. kipper
Well chaps first of all thank you for all the replies. WOW, lots of tikka T3 fans I can not believe not 1 vote for the Browning X Bolt???ant reason why??? As For budget, Well I was hoping that about the £1000 mark would cover everything = with gun £500 ish scope+mounts 3-400 ish and then a mod. Seems I was wrong.(Hope the wife dont read this ) I would rather buy new as I have no experience with buying centre fire rifles and would hate to spend my hard earned cash on a worn out rifle. And I would rather buy something that is capable of deer stalking work as I would like to do some if all goes to plan.(Iwould rather buy once instead of upgrading later)but as i said at the moment it will be mainly fox. Any other suggestions/advice graitfully received Kipper Edited January 13, 2011 by kipper
Devon Fox
I was shocked by the T3 votes - love mine, but I was fully expecting a dispute between T3 and Remmy owners

Any other suggestions/advice graitfully received Kipper Just a thought. But I would be inclined to buy a s/h Schmidt and bender 8x56,(should be able to get one for around 350-400...probably nearer £400). then I would go for the rifle if you're buying new and not worry too much about a moderator. I appreciate it makes the gun quieter,(duh) and recoil less but I have seen deer shot with an unmoderated rifle only for another to come out a short while later. Obviously it's your moneys though have fun choosing Ps you could also look out for a clean s/h moderator? ATB!
Raja Clavata
I bought a nearly new (13 shots) T3 SS Lite with S&B 8x56, optilocks and a T8 in .243 with change from £1000 from an Essex gun shop Pin-point accurate out the box and I've never had to adjust the scope or had any problems with it. I also have a Remmy 700 with kevlar stock in .308 - in comparison to the .243 I regret the purchase but at the time, I had a trip booked which required it, the only local .308 I could find was a new T3 Hunter and I did not want to spend more on the .308 than the .243 which gets used quite a bit more. Just my personal experience.
kent
there are plenty of .243" about that have seen very little use being bought and used on only a couple of stalking trips. The thing is finding one! Remember IF the seller doesn't reload useage will be indecated by ammo bought.

njc110381
I picked up a used CZ550 American for the money you're looking at spending. They're very nice rifles and I prefer mine to the T3 6.5x55 I had before. You can generally tell by looking at a rifle how much work it's done. If the blue on the bolt is worn then it's seen a few rounds, the one I bought looked like it had just come from the factory! If you buy from a decent shop they should be able to bore scope it an give you an idea. But then it all comes back to having that local shop who you trust. Perhaps it's worth an ask here if you find a gun to see what other peoples experiences tell you.

You just have to suss out what type of guy your dealing with
