njc110381
Hey guys. I've started field shooting with 90gr Prvi SP recently and wondered how they work on Deer? Reason for asking is I shot a bunny on a steep bank today and managed to retrieve the bullet from the soil behind it. It had gone in maybe a foot, lost all it's jacket and shed down to 26.7gr! That's a huge loss. I'm wondering what damage it will do to a carcass now?! Edited February 16, 2011 by njc110381
Newsportshooter
Are you on a budget? By that I mean why your using Prvi? Have you tried Geco ammo (there 105 Grain - so I'm told they are a little barrel selective) but they group like a deamon in my scout and there about £18 a box which is not bad at all. Yet to shoot anything live with them but when I do I'll do a similar weight retention write up. They use RWS bullets so should be good in this area. njc110381
I guess you could say I'm on a budget. There's no way I'm spending £30 per box for ammo that I will probably shoot 2 Deer with for every 20 I fire. The other 18 will most likely be sent at bunnies, Crows or Foxes so I really don't want to be spending 1.50 per round on that because it will limit my shooting. The other reason is that Prvi cases believe it or not are very good. Much better I would say than Remington, Winchester or Federal etc. When I've got 100 Prvi cases I will be home loading for a similar price to what I can buy Prvi ammo for. So basically I want the cases, Prvi rounds shoot ok in my gun and by whacking bunnies with them they don't last long enough to buy premium. I may put down 20-30 rounds on a good bunny session and I don't mind admitting if I was using quality rounds I couldn't afford to do that. EDIT.... Not tried Geco. 105gr is too heavy for what I do. steve_b_wales
Nothing wrong with PRVI ammo. I use 100 grn SP in my .243, and it's excellent for deer, and devastating for fox. Steve.

Vince Green
The weight loss on the bullet was almost certainly from the earth. Often on the zero range at bisley you will find empty jackets from soft point bullets just lying on top of the sand opened up like a flower. They just break up, which is good really from the point of view of preventing ricochets Edited February 16, 2011 by Vince Green
Dempy
I use 90grain Privi in my .243 for sika, roe and fox and 55grain in my 22.250 for fox and I have no complaints, they dont group as tight as the federal but they group well enough and are a quarter of the price! They kill very cleanly in my opion
Mr_Logic
Deker uses them, I used to many moons ago. They work well without excessive damage.

I have loaded Prvi along side both remington and federal and though they are ok there is no real contest in my book. The Prvi cases needed full sizing more quickly and suffered from dinks in the neck, I'm a bit fussy in the state of the cases I reload and found most prvi didnt make it past 5/6 reloads. I still have some federals that are going strong after 12 reloads and early signs are the remingtons will go at least as far. As for whacking bunnies with a 243,can't see the point when the hmr does the job cheaper and you can still eat the meat. And as for the earlier test about prvi weight retention, I don't think shooting a rabbit and then digging the bullet out of a foot of bank is really the right way to test. gixer1
PRVI is all i really use now, look back at some of my posts and you 'll see the groups they can achieve, all my roe and foxes have been taken with these (i use both the 90's and 100's and that was around 30 roe and probably 50 foxes in the last 12-18 months) the brass is quite good as well if you like reloading (according to a few people i have spoken too as i do not reload myself) to be honest i think you'd struggle to reload them as cheap as you can buy them as they are about £12 a box with us up here.... I used to buy federal power shok but there just wasn't any difference and the same with remmington for my rifle...and they are both up around the £38 a box mark!! Dekers
As Mr Logic mentioned above the 90g SP PRVI is the ammo of choice for my .243 Tikka Hunter. Gives good performance on deer (and other quarry), and my rifle likes them.
Suffolk shooter
Does anyone struggle to pop the spent primer out of their Prvi though? I only ask as the ones I've used, and tried don't seem to want to come out when using the Lee Turret Press? Any ideas??
waitesy
I bought some privi in .308 150s three years ago. I have used them on red, sika in the UK and wild boar in Poland. They have killed all game cleanly. They may not group as well as some commercial brands. But lets be honest and not too snobbish. If you can group within 3" and you are aiming broadside on within 100 to 150 metres you will thump em into the engine room of all the big spiecies in the uk. docholiday
Our group bought the Privi in bulk and they were £10.50 for 20 6.5 x 55 have given up using federal due to the difference in price, have to say the federal with my rifle grouped slightly better.
