alot of people asking for permission

i noticed that as the weather improves there are loads of people asking for permission recently.

does anyone else think the tone of some of the requests is a bit blunt? obviously newbies asking to go out for the first time isnt unusual but there have been a few requests for pest control and permissions etc.

i have taken quite a few people out on my permission (but i normally meet them in real life first) to get them out.

what i cant understand is why do some people think they can post up on the a shooting forum and expect to be given permission to roam over land? it doesnt make sense surely they would be better going on farmingonline forums and making the request there?

I have taken people out in the past. Some you never see or hear from again.

I even had one go back and shoot all the ducks on a pond then when the farmer collared him said I had given him permission.

I have others who to this day remain good friends

It is hard to gain permission but when you manage to get one the others will follow.

No one helped me but then again I'm very persistent some people just prefer to take the easy route and ask here first. I don't mind taking newbies out as long as they don't take the P

I wouldn't offer anyone I didn't already know to shoot over my permissions and nor would they. It's almost a closed shop down this way, population density and numpty overload mean that that's unlikely to change any time soon.

I think those posting requests should get off their keyboards and get knocking/ asking because that's the only way you'll get owt, certainly round my way.

I don't have too much of a problem over taking the od one or two our on my permission (Never more that one at a time) as long as they are prepared to observe a few "conditions"!

While they are out with me I will be hospitable, welcoming and helpful but they have to listen to and agree to what I ask, especially where gun safety is concerned.

If it is with either a shotgun or a firearm I will ask to check their certificate first and have a chat with them to make sure that they have a reasonable idea of what they are doing.

I will ALWAYS introduce them to the landowner first and ask his permission for them to accompany me!

They will always have to be within talking distance from me and not allowed to roam freely wherever they want, and it is always on the understanding that the invitation for that day is not an open invitation to go on my permissions whenecver they feel like it or to go to the farmer and ask for permenant written permission!

As long as they are willing to observe these few "rules" they are welcome to acompany me and learn from what bit of knowledge I have!

I do, in the long term, prefer to try to help advising them on how to go about finding and asking for their own permissions.

I can understand what you mean, but you have to remember there are legitimate people looking for land to shoot on as well.

I personaly have just moved house, so now my permissions are about 1h 40 minutes away. I can still get to them at weekends but not in the evening like I used too. I have made several ways of contact one via this site and another sending out letters to as many of the local farms that I can find.

If I was to get no reply via this site then there is no harm done but if one person was to reply then thats great (there is a section for this after all).

Sadly there are and allways will be people about who abuse permissions and make it difficult for anyone to get permission in the future. One question that I have to ask is if a newbie doesnt have land, why the hell is a feo granting them a licence in the first place.

I also agree some people just seem to think that they will put a post up and then be allowed to shoot where ever when ever they feel offering nothing in return. End of the day do you think they will get permission? I very much doubt it as well, but if you are prepared to help out, show what you are like and like myself offer the landowner a reference from your other permissions like I am then at least you stand a chance.

Its when the post comes up and its only their 4/5 post and asking...

I was tempted to take someone out who put a post up but the attitude after I posted on the thread said it all so I did not bother.

All I do is have a look at google earth/business and I go door knocking one day on my way to work....

land is so hard to get hold of when i first started a got a 125 motor bike and away i went knocking doors i now im lucky enought to shoot over 3 game syndicates that add up to 11,000 acres and help the keeper. also shoot 12 farms around the midlands. but the amount of time iv put in knocking doors beating sending emails getting cards made pestering farmers following tractors helping out on the farm to get land its endless not to mention buying bottles and chocolates at xmass but it all pays of in the end.

point is (bit harsh)

WHATS WRONG WITH THERE LEGS!

if its the yonger generation then fine help as much as poss to keep the sport going. but kids dont want to no about the sport in my eyes. if its not on the playstation they dont no what it is.

For now i have stopped taking anyone other than that guys im shooting with at the moment. over the last few years i have taken alot of people out, some as big gauges, upto 12 at a time plus ones and twos. i had two people thank me for the time i have put in, looking for birds all week, putting them on flight lines, even carry kit for them.

One of the guys i still shoot with, another i understand his bathroom comes first.hehe but thats in now, due to the little thanks i have had and high expectations from some shooters, i not longer take people out, even though i never have charged anyone.

This thread reminds me a bit of Mary Whitehouse and her pals..." I had to watch the film 3 times because I couldn't believe how smutty it was the first time!!"

There is a section specifically for asking about shooting etc. If it is going to upset you - probably best not to read it

Having said that, if there are any people reading who are thinking about asking for permission, please, please, pretty please, make sure you put the request in the shooting WANTED section and not the shooting AVAILABLE section.

Nothing annoys me more than that. In fact sometimes I have to read them twice to check how annoying they really are....

I have to admit, as a newbie to the sport, I've not posted asking for permission. Though I do watch out for it where offered just so I can get out and learn. I have and do continue to ask for permission but so far no luck. Hopefully I'll be in the right place at the right time one day but unless I pay for days out, I would not get out without the kind offers of those on PW.

I'd like to think it's pretty easy to tell the ***s takers from those who have a genuine interest, and I hope that's the way I come accross. For now I'm sitting back and absorbing what knowlege I can sponge from posts on here until I get my own permission, but nothing beats being taught by an experienced hand.

Also manners cost nothing. Those that don't use them and treat the gift of an invite appropriatly deserve all they get; no return invite/future knowledge. Were not all the same and I sincerly hope that the past spirit of gifting days/experience does not stop due to a few bad experiences Of *** head newbies.

Appologies if this comes across as a small rant but were not all the same. I will put back in as soon as I am able

What`s more amazing is when you post shooting available and there are loads of people requesting permission then all of a sudden nobody is interested.

I dont understand it Andy.... i've seen several airgun/rifle shooters asking for a chance in Kent, and with your permission and knowledge of the area it would have been a good night for someone....
