I have a P - reg 2ltr TDI with 118ish K on the clock and so far has needed little in the way of spares. It was towing the caravan to Cornwall a couple of yrs ago on the hottest day for xxx years and didn`t faulter.`snot bad offroad too and does 35 miles to the gallon.

I like it and would have another but the GV is a bit girly looks wise.

Jimny should have a oil burner in it`s range too IMO.

Including the wifes current softy Ive had three a 1.6 16v a 2.5 V6 and a 1.6 8v all petrol.

Im sure we will get the usual "you cant beat a discovery, landy, trooper, et al et al ****" but I couldnt fault any of them. Id pit my old V6 against any of them off road and often did at the Suzuki Trials in Cirencester Park. Even the wifes current 1.6 soft top is brilliant off road in low range and in the recent snow weve had its got us out of the smelly several times ( we live in the middle of nowhere surrounded by B roads which are all at least 1 in 6 )

The japanese ceratainly know a thing or two about aluminium engines.

Just check that the timing belt has been replaced ( although this is not a big job)

Check the back of the engine for Oil leaks from the rocker gasket ( bit prone to this ) and also the Inside of the oil filler cap for white scummy deposits which could indicate a blown head gasket or what is usually the case with cars of this age blocked up breather system which just needs a damn good flush through.

If its in reasonable nick, and a sensible price buy it. However there are plenty about if you cant strike a decent deal.

FM.

I was going in to work this morning (snow every whare) and I saw a police van with its blues going up ahead. I pulled up to the van and went round. On the other side I saw a bus at the bottom of a very steep dip the police man stoped me and said you might as well turn round no one has been able to get up the hill. Being the arogant sod I am I said watch this and proceded to drive straight up the snow coverd slope that had beeten all who had come before. I have proper mud and snow tyres but to be honest it was not even strugeling.

Edited to add I was in my K plate Vitara. with a genuine 66K on the clock, I had its MOT last week and the mechanic recons it is the most solid example he has seen around that age. So I was quite pleased at that.

i've had a 1992 1.6 jlx for a while now and it's pretty good , it's not as good off road as my old sj410 but it's a lot nicer on the tarmac , it's a soft top so it's ok for shooting from the top and it's pretty decent on fuel as long as i don't hammer it , the one bad thing about it is the room in the back is practicaly zero but you can't have everything i suppose. ;)

I have 1 word for you

Marmite!

Yup Marmite!!!!!

They are like Marmite

You either Love em or you hate em

I hate em after trying one out for a fortnight and the thing broke down more times than it was on the road ;)

Others have no trouble but i drew the line.

I am not the only one who had trouble with em either

Friends had em and loathed em and my old mans boss's son had one and hated it also
