Mungler
Alright, 17 year old female driver. Just passed her test. Obviously no convictions, no NCD etc Forget the car, it doesn't have to be trendy or interesting - it's pure transport, and my research indicates that cheap starter type cars are plentiful and cheap, it's the insurance that's the killer. So what is the cheapest car for a 17 year old girl to buy and most importantly insure. There should be a statistical and factual answer to this? Any help gratefully received. DSPUK
No such thing as cheap insurance for anyone now - bandwagon comes to mind dave
Mungler
I should add that it has to be the cheapest - I'm not talking new car nor fully comp. What about something like an old Mk4 Fiesta on 3P/F/T? Or a Fiat Panda? Ford KA? This research might well have been done by one of the younger forum members who have recently passed their test or are looking to pass their test. I recently bought a Suzuki SJ Jeep - as a 2nd car I didn't have any NCD to apply to the vehicle. I am nearly 40, have 2 lots 3 points (expired but still within 5 years on my license and so disclosable to the insurance companies) and the only accident I have been involved in was when an idiot drove into the back of me when I was stationary at a zebra crossing and letting someone cross. The cheapest internet quote I could get was on "van insurance", 3rd party only and it was about £400. Absolute joke.
Cosd
What about something like a smart car, if you take all costs including fuel etc it may be a cheap option
magman
The old Mini 750cc if you can find one has to be in with a chance
Mungler
I think I have the answer, a 0.8 litre Daewoo Matiz.

J@mes
The Citroen C1/Pug 107/Toyota Aygo will be cheap - tiny engines and cheap parts. Failing that as mentioned above, maybe some kind of classic car such as a mini. Or maybe a Landrover SIII 109? Jensen Interceptor?

12borejimbo
On a serious note one of my mates works in insurance, the most common cars are always the most expensive to insure, so try and get something that not everyone has, i know it's hard, but not the usual fiesta route. I would say either a cheap 1.4 golf, reliable and quality, or something like a 306 diesel, cheap to run. There not everyone's choice but I bet it will work. Go on confused.com because once you have entered in your details, go to edit quote and you can select car make and model, I did this when I was dreaming about what performance cars would be to insure, like m3s and scoobys

Harnser
Mrs harnser has just bought a brand new Citroen C1. One liter 3 cylinder engine 60 miles to the gallon . Super ,super little car if you dont want to break any land speed records . Got to be one of the cheapest to insure . Free tax for the first year and then about 20 quid a year . Saw a nice one 07 plate advertised for £3800 with only 5 thousand miles on the clock . We dont insure this one it is on our daughters fleet policy . Harnser . Hamster
I`m in the trade and recently got my 18 year old niece a Clio 1.2 05 plate which are group 3 insurance but her dad opted for a Saab 2.0 Convertible auto which is classic status and has insured them both on it and reckons it works out slightly cheaper than the Clio. A couple of years ago we would have been talking around the £1700 mark, lately it seems double that which makes me wonder how any youngster can afford to drive!! :o
Mungler
I have just run a quote through confused for: Daewoo Matiz Se+ 2000 796cc Five Door Hatchback Manual Petrol with a value of £950 The cheapest quote for 3rd p/f/t was... wait for it...... £4321.70 Errrrr mental. I knew it was bad for young driver but had no idea it was that bad. Let me have a play with that quote - change occupation to agoraphobic nun, add a tracker, garage storage and reduce the annual milage etc.
Mungler
I made some changes and added a Tracker etc and it came back at £100 more. Proper mental. Well, that's the end of that! Edited June 10, 2011 by Mungler
