Beardo
Went for a stalk with SS last night over at out shoot, and it was my turn for lady luck to shine... We split up and i took the bottom of the wood, SS the top. After very slowly walking through the wood, i spotted a white flash of tail, though it looked low so i thought it might be a rabbit. So i stopped for a while but couldn't see anything, so then carried on slowly to our newest high seat (a rather nice triangular affair, with a swivel office seat and rests all round!). Sat up there for about 20 mins facing up a ride. I then heard a very quiet sound to my left, back the way i had come from, so gently turned and saw a decent size Buck creeping through the trees at around 40 yards. He was quartering towards me through a lot of cover, heading towards a ditch. So i waited as long as possible, and just before he got into the ditch, there was a clear shot as he turned slightly more side on. Nice hit, good sound, and he did the 4 legged jump, but then slipped into the ditch. I reloaded and waiting a while, but couldn't see him. So i then climbed down and went to where he was shot - a good blood trail with nice frothy blood, but i still couldn't find him. So called SS on the mobile (who had brought Molly his Lab), who then came down to meet me. Molly immediately got on the scent and found the Muntjac all of five yards from where i shot it! When doing the gralloch, the heart and lungs were just soup, and unfortunately the rumen had a tiny tear, but i took it out carefully without contaminating anything. Just goes to show how little room for error there is with a Muntjac (you can see the entry hole is perfect in the photo, it may have just been a little less side on than i thought in the shadows). Of course the only problem with shooting deer at twilight on a school night is late to bed! But i eventually got it all done and in the larder (dehooved, beheaded and fully gralloched it weighed in at 12kg/26lb) Kit wise - RWS Titan .223 firing 55gr Samson hollow-points, Swarovski 6-18x50 TDS 4 (turned down to 6!), T8

garyb
Nice write up Nick.. I ALWAYS shoot my Munties in the shoulder, for the reason you've found! There isn't much room for error with them like on a Fallow / Roe. This tip was passed onto me by a good Norfolk stalker I know. Much less chance of clipping the Rumen, or having it split on a rib as it begins to expand. Not had a runner yet
al4x
no runners with a 308 through the shoulder why am I not surprised Nice one Nick be perfect for BBQ time coming up. Re enforces why its very handy to have a dog with you,

Stealth Stalker
It was one of those nights when I just knew we'd need the dog, she is turning in to a great all rounder Glad you got your Munty mate. And after my early morning stalk with Gary it was the perfect end to a long long day, & just for everybodys information I am yet to shoot a Munty there, un like some of the above posters And with me putting the first batch of my pheasants to wood yesterday, we will need to keep a look out for Charlie as well as meat for those barbies! garyb
It's red letter days like these why we spend so much money and time out there doing it! Wouldn't change it for the world. Edited June 23, 2011 by garyb

Woodcock Magnet
excellent mate, do you find skinning a Munti tough going or not
Beardo
i don't think it's hard, it just takes time - i'd rather skin it when warm, but as per last night, sometimes it's not practical. If you don't want to keep the hide, just run the knife up the spine (blade pointing out) and skin away from it - easier than trying to skin from the flanks etc.
Dunkield
I find them easier than roe, well less messy anyway, I run a knife from the centre out and up the legs and take it from there. Gets the job jobbed, but from memory Camokid is the neatest skinner I have seen on here. There are at least a dozen Muntjac that might disagree with this statement, if they could Yes Stuart... but with a girly gun
