Nah, you're alright. I'll take my own hard won opinion over that of a 'select' committee of people with an over inflated opinion of themselves and those they consider worthy. Gordon R
There are a number of people who can be classed as excellent, but I think that the soldiers who have put their life on the line, with little regard for their own safety - winning the VC - have to be at the very top. UKPoacher
The sad fact is that there is no one who immediately springs to mind and even on reflection and research, not one person I can think of is worthy of the title. Actors perform other people's work. The script writer, producer, camera operator and location finder all contribute more than the actor who takes the credit and highest wage. Sports personalities are predominantly doing it for themselves although Beckham is putting something back as regards his academy. Politicians, again doing it for themselves with the arguable exception of Tony Benn, but his policies are hardly mainstream. Explorers likewise these days. Few set out to further our knowledge and understanding. Ditto with businessmen such as Branson and Lord Sugar who are predominantly self absorbed. One name most will never have heard of is Sir John Sulston, a British medical researcher, Nobel Prizewinner and founder of the Sanger Institute. He has contributed a vast amount to medical research in the field of DNA. That has revolutionised our understanding of so many aspects of life and resulted in cold case crimes being solved, a greater understanding of where humans belong in the world and even more importantly is being used more and more to cure diseases and prevent unnecessary deaths. So ladies and gentlemen, I give you Sir John Sulston as my nominee of Greatest Living Brit. My second nomination is Ken Dodd for his contribution to comedy and accountancy. secretagentmole
There is one who should be in the list, built his own car, designed a vital safety piece of aeronautical equipment that improved the safety on one type of rotary winged aircraft, holds several world records, including being the oldest pilot still licensed to fly, indeed he flies down to the shops from his home in Norfolk! He has also appeared in one film piloting a specially commissioned aircraft... The famous aircraft he flew in the movie? Little Nellie. The man, Wing Commander K H Wallis MBE, DEng (hc), Ph.D (hc), CEng, FRAeS, FSETP, FlnsTA(hc), RAF (Ret'd)!
