Scope suggestions

Just got my new rifle and am due to go to the USA with work in the next few months, but I need a budget scope to put on my rifle until then, up to about £150/180ish, it will be used for fox and deer, I would prefer variable with high mag and 50 o.j. and needs to be 30mm tube to fit my mounts....

I was thinking a nikko sterling? Any suggestions?

Nikko Sterling

I reckon you'll struggle to find anything new with a 30mm tube for that money. Maybe a second hand Bushnell?

Weaver are very good for the money but I don't know if they go that low in a 30mm.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if I had to go below £200 I'd have a Hawke over a Nikko Serling any day.

Sounds like you'd be better off being patient until you go to the States and save your money to put towards something tastey.

If you really can't wait I'd look for a nice second hand scope that I'd want to keep. If you find a bargain in 1" it would be worth buying a set of rings for it. At least you'd have a decent rig you could keep, rather than blowing money on junk as a temporary fix.

Anyone you could borrow something from and just get the rings?

I have always rated the Simmons Whitetail Classic range of scopes. The 3.5-10x50 is superb value for money scope but it only comes in a 1" tube. It's another option for you but you'll need to change your scope mounts for this.

These scopes are well worth a look at and excellent value for money glass!!

I was going to ask what is it going on, I would suggest an MTC scope, ive got a viper on my hummer, nice scope for the money, bought it brand new for £229, you can pick them up 2nd hand for £150 ish. Nikko stirling no, I had one and found it to be milky on high mag. Hawke are good, never had a bad scope, and the top end are very good for the money.

Barska are not bad, you can get very good prices on Amazon for them, I got a 6.5-20x50 Varmint scope for $69, now on sale for $39!!, at the time it was over £200 here in the UK. I've got it on my .308 and it's pretty good, obviously not a Leupold or S&B but for the price a real bargain.

For that sort of money you could by a really nice quality Bushnell or Bausch & Lomb - I got a

Bushnell Banner 3-9 x 40 for peanuts in the 80's from US.

That would be perfect if only it was 30mm tube....

do you have to have a scope on it? with a .243 I'd be tempted to wait rather than put something cheap on that might let you down when you most need it.

Or spend a bit more put a second hand S&B 8x56 on it and you'll get your money back when you sell it

+1 for older Simmons, not sure how the new stuff stacks up.
