At last, My "Trophy"!

Some of you will remember that I put a post up about getting my first Roe Buck (I wasn't happy with one so I got two) a few weeks ago but I didn't get a chance to get any photos. Well I went to my mates place today only to find that he had saved the head of my first Roe Buck for me. He has cleaned and boiled it ready for "mounting"!

OK, it's not a medal of anything special compared to what some of you manage to get but it means a lot to me as this was my first Roe Buck!

What I would like to do is mount it on some sort of a wooden plaque to put on my study wall so I am looking for some advice here, what is the best way to do this and what will I need please? (Bearing in mind that I am on quite a tight budget)

Here is the head that I have to work with as a great memory for me!

well done frenchie, i was thinking if you mount it on a wooden plaque you could write on it FRENCHIE,S FIRST HEAD but would mrs f get the wrong idea

She might get the wrong idea, she usually does!:lol: Mind you there are times when she gets ibn one of her moods when I could be tempted to mount her head on a piece of wood!:lol::lol:

Thanks for that link mate, it look just the job and quite "affordable"!

How is it best to mount the head onto the shield please, glue, screws or what?

Any thoughts?

Screw it from the back of the plaque so the screw head isnt seen.Theres a thickish bit of bone just above the nasal area and the screw will get a decent grip there.

Hiya

May I suggest that you consider what sort of cut you want (or not) before looking at the ways of mounting to a shield.

The 'cut' is a long (upper skull I think) or short (through the eye sockets) using an appropriate jig (Bushwear do them) to ensure its straight etc (practiced hand needed if you think you can or spoils trophy).

I'm sure that U-Tube or Google will throw up pages of enlightenment.

Recent prices for skinning skull, boiling out, cutting and mounting on a wooden plaque leave little change out of £70-80 down this end of the woods.

My first Roe skull was ruined by a friend who said he could cut straight without a jig - I've still got it in butchered form................

i dont tend to cut my skulls i just hang them as they are a have a few on my walls and if they all had wooden plaque i would soon run out of space.

Not doing very well at mounting the one i found, the bit of lovely cherry wood i got off a tree surgeon has now split,i cut the head short and wonky and will now have to scribe it to get it straight, but it was easy to cut with a hacksaw, have got two munties to mount as well and will prob use seasoned oak :good:
