Economy vs performance

Go batting down the motorway at 140 ish, someone pulls out in front of you doing 100mph, they rarely look behind as doing a ton makes him think that no one will be coming down on him from behind, wrong,!!. Saw a Renualt 19 Turbo driver one night that was doing over 130 ( I was following at a similar pace a few hundred yards behind using him as a Police sweeper) ) **** himself when that happened to him late one night.

It's for this same reason that I've done away with my 'big' motorbikes. My ZX-10 would do 102 mph in 1st gear and be well beyond double the speed limit as you changed into third...it was a 6 speed box!!!! Just too easy and too much temptation on the road, I took it to Germany where I had an indicated 328km/h! It makes them unuseable on the road if you decide to choose life! I now leave the hooning to track and tend to bimble on the road.

there is a common problem with the alloys cracking. most people will just buy a another wheel from flea bay or where ever the truth is bmw know all about this fault and if you kick off in the dealership enough they will if you make enough noise about it replace the the wheel f.o.c.

this is covered in most bmw forums watchdog have even had there teeth into it saying that bmw should have done a recall

Was this not a particular type of 19" wheel and tyre combo and was found to be down to impact forces as the wheels were more than .03 out of round due to a severe impact?

So a Tdi Golf will outrun a V6 off a standing start? I've never found one that has yet, but ok.

Budget isn't much unfortunately. Maybe £8k at a push. I don't want anything too new, I can't afford the depreciation!

Our Golf will go down to single figures MPG if you thrash it. I don't do that often to be honest but I do like something that gets a move on when you need it to. I know a lot of people with sub 1.6 cars and they are painful. On hills you feel you should get out and give the engine a hand!

I'd love a 330d but my other half really doesn't like them... ???

ALfa GT JTDm Q2 if you can and get it chipped/remapped properly I have the astra 150BHp and mate has the alfa, alfa chassis puts the power down better and smoother and is quicker on the road (clutch is heavy and its 2 door) but looks great BIG boot mate plays Ice hockey and gets his huge kitbag in with ease (which wont fit a golf boot!) as long as they are serviced and cam belts done issues very limited (same engine as the astra but different configuration)

Just a shame about the interior colour

Fast diesels are the way forward. Audi do a good 2.0 diesel, same as vw, skoda, seat, Citroën , the 2.2 hdi from Citroën certainly picks it's toes up. Jag BMW and merchant all have similar 2.7 and 3.0 diesels we have an xf 2.7 does around 35-40 mpg when cruising. Put your toe down in sport mode and your quickly at 100, without even noticing. HOw much dollar you got ? Personally I like the seat leon the fr version Or fabia vrs. And the 888 diesel astra was fairly quick, get it mapped and your looking at some quite good bhp. I don't see the point as I have an r reg astra and love it to bits. Gets me around, am not bothered if I bump it, it's brill in the snow and drifts awesome, and economical with the 1.7td in and will sit at 80 all day at about 3k. Run it on veg in summer. Done 30k with me and it's cost 300 quid bargain, and it's cost me a wishbone for 21 quid

Must admit that I read that and thought 'Yeah, right!'.

Probably another urban myth much like the Golf Tdi was as fast as the same Golf GTi of the time, like Hell it was! (Yes I did own a GTi.)

A mate went from an Old shape 320td to a Leon 1.4 TFSI and recons the Leon is much quicker and a better drive, but for £8k if i didn't need an estate I would have a GT JTDm straight away better value than the Golf or A3, Shame they stopped making them mmmmmmmmmm http://fullscreen.peweb1.m25.co.uk/?Theme=AlfaRomeo&DefaultImage=alfaweb&Id=601408096

I don't know why but I don't really like the look of any of the Seats - I'm told they're very well made and reliable though. Alfa... That looks nice but not really my thing. I would really like a small estate - Audi A4, BMW or Skoda. Octavia is it? They're nice cars. Don't think the other half likes BMW much? She wants a Leon but I hate them with a passion!

What's the economy like on the Audi A4 diesels? I still want an S4 but hey, not sure I'll be allowed!:oops:
