Just spent 3 hours making a huge batch of Sushi for a Ale Festival today at 12 mid day at Durham.

Been playing with idea's for fillings and tried smoked salmon and honey which turned out nicely. Chicken and stuffing as well and coronation chicken too. Did a lot of Vegetarian too and even tried a pepperami one. Should be interesting to see what people think. The last load I made went down a storm.

Anyone else make their own?

Make it quite a lot ,we use nicely seasoned sushi rice, nori and a rolling mat, fresh prawns ,salmon either smoked or chemically cooked as some say ,raw fish can put you off trying ,peeled cucumber again you can pickle in rice vinegar, roasted red peeper the world is your oyster,we roll it up slice it, serve with a ketchup manis and rice vinegar dipping sauce, both my boys eat it,and one will choose it over bread when on a picnic

To Jacksdad, The stuff in Tesco is ok, it will give you an idea if you fancy spending some cash and going somewhere proper to give it a go. Simple enough to make your own though. Duck with plum sauce is a favourite of mine, and I flake some trout fillets also. You can use whatever you want. I struggled with presentation on my first few attempts. Loads of great video's on youtube to get you going. Good luck, Tim.

I eat loads of sushi. The Asian lady at our local asian goods shop says that she uses sushi in the same way that the British use buble and squeek. Told me a few weeks back that she has used fried egg and mashed spuds in the past...

Think I will stick to edomeme beans, crab, pepper, beetroot, salmon, etc.

I've made my own for years now. Love love love it with smoked mackerel, lightly fried pepper, cucumber and a bit of edam. Sashimi is raw fish and can be a part of a sushi platter or not - up to you! My daughters (7 and 4) love it both like that, or with just cheese, omelette, cucumber or tuna mayonnaise. Have made it with smoked salmon (OK, I did say you didn't HAVE to have raw fish!!!!) which was lush and also with spicy, garlicky fried mince beef. Supermarket own made is rubbish - get yourself a book / youtube video and get creative! Tesco do sell the "raw" ingredients - you'll need special sushi rice (otherwise it won't stick together), nori (seaweed paper) and fillings. You don't need a roll mat, although it does help with the shape of the finished roll. Wasabi and soy sauce (pref Shoyu) are good with the finished product, but don't drown it.

Sorry - probably far too much info, but if you do want to try making your own, I'm more than happy to help. Was taught by a lovely South Korean lady who said that they have sushi instead of sandwiches there and we use it as a packed lunch every now and again as it's so tasty.

I dont understand its popularity, odd food for odd people and there are plenty of those around. I just think its fad food as promoted by some poxy celebrity. Try a fresh steak pie, mashed potato and baked beans, look someone in the eye and tell them its not as nice as Sushi!

Variety is the spice of life apparently, mate...

Some people like to eat the same old foods over...and over...etc... I like to try new things :good:

I love a meat pie and mash as much as the next gal, but I have to say that sushi was a revelation. And if you lived in South East Asia, I think you'd find that you would be considered odd!!! :P:oops: I only tried it because I *had* to (well, it would be rude to turn down food that someone else has prepared for you) and now am hooked. It's just as carbohydrate filled as your proverbial pie and taties and can be adjusted with wasabi the same as you would with mustard. Just a different set of flavours (or not...think I may try a game version, possibly with some mustard as an alternative to wasabi)....anyone else any ideas for recipes?

Californian roll is a bit awkward to make but yeah it's nice when done.

The Pepperami one was a great success. The coronation chicken was an idea I took from Morrisons Sushi but it tastes better. I clown about with different fillings quite often and find some good ones.

The whole day was fab. Had people from all over the UK on coach trips to Durham and even had a Danish chap tucking in :good:

Next time I will be making Humous taramasalata and tzadziki (Spellings)?

Greek dishes. Made Stifado the other week and that was gorgeous.
