It's a Profession I think you would need to be careful entering, picture the scene - you walk into a flat that stinks to high heaven and has never been cleaned to find a group of adults all drunk/drugged up to the eyeballs and a 2 year old and 7 month old baby closed in a room lying in thier own excrement, the baby is crying hysterically and it's cot in soaking with urine, the 2 year old looks thin and ill.....

One of the oxygen thief Adults comes up to you hurling verbal abuse and telling you to **** off and that "he'll decide what his kids need"......

Now ask yourself if you would swing for the guy.....I know I would want to...

It's unfortunatly not always a simple case of walking in and taking kids from these low lives to save the day and I have seen a few people that are very frustrated with the system!

It has the potential to be a heartbreaking career where kids are involved, maybe so on the adult side too.

Regards,

Gixer

My wife has just resigned as a senior social worker paying for out children's childcare and working her **** off for a pittance at the end of the month is too hard.

Woking in the children with disability team was quite rewarding as you could actually make a difference but she has just done a year with an adult team and it was like banging your head against a dirty stinky wall. Having to leave children with abusive good for nothing smack heads because your hands are tied with rules, budget constraints and never ending paper work eats your moral.

I hate to say it but in a lot of cases a south american style death squad would be more appropriate, at least some of the endless money we waste on these spongers could be spent directly on the innocent kids.

One of the ******** in Cambridge gets a taxi there and back to a special school in Cumbria every week, we are doing approx £300k a year on this little asbo's "care" package and I guarantee you he will have stabbed someone by the age of twenty.

My wife's work in the NHS interfaces with the social workers. They come over to her as less than committed but the reality I think is they just throw money at problems to cover their tails as a means of self protection. It really is a job where you could find your picture on the front page one day.

The suggestion that South American style death squads would be a better way of dealing with some of the clients has great merit. The truth is if many of them weren't being propped up by huge amounts of public money and resources they would be dead. So just let nature take its course. Thats what happens elsewhere. Darwin knew best. I am not trying to be excessively reactionary just realistic.

I worked alongside SW's and Care Workers as a teacher for nearly 30 years....

You could be great at it but you will need to be a very special person with nerves of steel, a bullet proof ego, have to ability to work without getting emotionally involved and leave the job at work when your day is over!

If you care about people..don't bother! (JMHO)

Sorry this sounds harsh. If you had seen what I've seen......

Greetings, and Ello to all of you I haven't spoken to in a while. I've been a social worker in child protection for coming on 10 years now. I won't even bother to respond to ignorant comments about my profession, as it's so not worth it. I also don't plan to rant and rave on a public forum as 1. I don't want to get banned, and 2. Big brother is always watching and I have a great respect for my professionalism. However if you'd like a private chat with me, feel free to pm me and I'll do my best to give you my personal honest opinions.

Interesting responses. I am a Youth Officer based in a very unique setting in South Wales buddy, I manage a programme on behalf of our local authorities Social Services. I see the three sides of the coin! Feel free to get in touch if you think I can help. Tim.
