WinchesterDave
My mates got a second hand silver pigeon s 3" chambers, fixed choke 1/4&1/2 he was wondering whether he can put 3 " steel through it ? And if so, normal or high performance steel?
haggis
Half choke is max for steel so should be ok.
WinchesterDave
Half choke is max for steel so should be ok. So the silver pigeon s it steel shot proofed? Is it proofed to 1050 bar or 1370 bar though?
Beardo
It'll say on the barrel, I'll check mine later
AlistairB
I'd wait for Nick to come back, but i checked my SP5 sometime ago as i needed to use HP Steel through it and it was proved for 1370 bar. AB
WinchesterDave
Thank you! Would be good to know for definate if it can fire HP steel
Beardo
Mine has KG 1,480 on it (which if i'm correct is 1451 bar?) - which is HP Steel. According to Beretta, you need to make sure the chokes have SP on them and not tighter than modified. WinchesterDave
I thought HP steel only went up to 1370 bar ?
Beardo
so therefore it's proofed for higher pressures than HP Steel note - this may be incorrect, it's proofed to higher pressures using lead! HDAV
My mates got a second hand silver pigeon s 3" chambers, fixed choke 1/4&1/2 he was wondering whether he can put 3 " steel through it ? And if so, normal or high performance steel? Normal steel yes HP I wouldn't not without HP steel proof. Standard Steel shot cannot be larger than 3.25mm i.e. English no.3, but can beused through any choke. There is no limit on shot size in High Performance Steel cartridges but if it is greater than 4.0mm (i.e. English BB or larger) then choke less than half should be used. 3. The critical rule is that Standard Steel cartridges can be fired through any gun proved to the standard level (ie most “Nitro” proved guns, proved to at least 930 bar) but High Performance Steel should be fired only through guns that have passed Steel Shot proof. These guns should be proved to at least 1320 bar, be stamped with "Steel Shot" and a have a Fleur de Lys proof mark to prove it). http://www.basc.org.uk/download.cfm/docid/BAC60995-5CBE-4047-8AD032DF16AD1F1A Edited January 18, 2012 by HDAV

HDAV
You can if you wish submit your gun to the Birmingham proof house for proof testing and get the Fleur de Lys mark if it passes....

ChrisAsh
Normal steel yes HP I wouldn't not without HP steel proof. http://www.basc.org.uk/download.cfm/docid/BAC60995-5CBE-4047-8AD032DF16AD1F1A My bettinsolli handbook says limited to half choke for steel so rather arogant for BACS to go against manufacturer
