unapalomablanca
Let me ask you one question. If you did find something, How would you sell it without questions being asked? Unless its properly validated its nearly worthless in reality. Private collectors. A lot of these finds are valued by people with a vested interest, so the valuation and what you get isnt what its worth. That bloke a couple of years ago got stitched up with all that booty. The museum got it for peanuts as its all jobs for the boys.

Anyway he will not give you a realistic price he will rip you off. You could say the same about finding a gun, which is probably more likely Edited January 25, 2012 by Vince Green
Good shot?
Be honest and report it. You would be removing history from it's source. A lot more could be found out as to the context of the find. On a more positive note, more treasure may be found and you could get a reward from the landowner, more valuable than the amount you have stolen. If you allowed someone into your garden and they done the same thing what would your think? +1 without doubt.
Fisherman Mike
In the words of the great Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius..... "quod in omni vita facimus in aeternum resonat" ( What we do in life echos in Eternity) Im also a great believer in the old saying "What goes round comes round" So honesty is always the best policy. Thunderbird
Brilliant link to that ring, what an amazing find. I've often wondered what's lying just a few feet beneath us. We must have all walked over/past wonders and never known it.

Mungler
I'd melt the stuff down. Whilst being an international man of mystery and assassin sounds grand, my golden gun doesn't run on thin air. And besides I'm sure there would be enough gold left over for a chunky curb chain and an f-off sovereign ring. Thinking about it, someones found the ring belonging to a massive Chav from 1500 ad

Lord Geordie
Declare it with the owner of the land it's the right thing to do! A friend of mine Detects and has found some really nice artifacts dating back as far as iron age. He had Saxon Burials and Roman finds too and a few sites he found were pre historic. Most recently was a VERY rare coin and the most intact of its kind in existance. Coins pendants brooches etc are a norm for him and he has a deal with the land owner for 50:50 and ALL his finds are logged correctly with the relevant departments as HE believes it should go on display to the public not sit in a collectors drawer hidden for a further 3000 years

If i found an old girls purse i would try my nuts off to get it back to her and rightly so.

unapalomablanca
Imagine it was found in your back garden.... Yeh, but its not their back garden. They have one of those aswell, if i found it in a farmers back garden i'd agree with you. Its land that was pinched from someone 1500years before and was handed down. It's our cultural heritage so you have a duty to record what you have found. 4. It's against the law. 5. Just because the original owner is dead dosen't mean it's free. So if its not mine why would people be falling over themselves to give me and the farmer cold hard cash for it so they could own it?
FalconFN
So if its not mine why would people be falling over themselves to give me and the farmer cold hard cash for it so they could own it? Because it belongs to the land owner or the state, not you.
