fiiish1987
Hi. I think my neighbours are poachers! I know thats a very serious allogation to make but from what i see there definatly up to something. It's either that or drug running (a possibility but a bit far fetched i think!). What do i do about it?/ who do i speak to about it?
dunganick
out of intrest what makes you think they are poachers? not all poachers will kill you for asking what they do, some are fine and nice people, others fit better into the stereotypical view people have of them. darebear
to be honest, i dont know whats more probable these days. drug dealing or poaching.
fiiish1987
these guys are most definatly the steriotypes. 1) all of the following occurs between nightfall and sunrise 2) They turn up in two or three 4x4's with loads of gear in the back 3) They sometimes have 2 quad bikes as well 4) They operate out of a shed next to the house under muffled voices (yet the doors open so i have a clear view of the gearing up in cammo (they shut the door when they hear a car or someone walking by) 5) When they come back with their vehicles coated in mud they immediatly powerhose them (normally between 2 and 4 am!) 6) They also sometimes take their mastiff type dog with them as well. Unfortunatly theres nothing concrete here, i've not even seen a rifle or gun case as they dont keep any in the shed and the 4x4 windows are shaded up so i can only see shapes. its mainly a suspicion, along with the fact that they are all dodgy charecters! Oh i forgot. my favourite bit is..... when the police come round they NEVER ANSWER THE DOOR! yet as soon as the cops come they're back out. oh and they have a cctv that doesn't point into their garden but down the road! Dunkield
the dog doesnt ever seem to have injuries does it? I thought badger baiting or something similar too . . Sounds well sus though, you are right to be concerned, and I thought Dorset was full of 'downshifters' from the city
fiiish1987
havent seen any but only seen it close up once. i'll try and have another look. it's normally left in the back garden all day!
il cacciatore
This is most interesting. Why do you assume that they are not undertaking shooting legally? Maybe they are part of a syndicate and want to get their moneys worth from it? Police at your door doesnt always mean that you have commited a crime. edit - oops yeh you say that they go out when its dark, maybe they really enjoy shooting foxes??? Axe
I don't think you ought ot be getting involved. If they are up to no good they will be caugth eventually. If not you could make matters very uncomfortable for yourself.
il cacciatore
How often does this happen a week?
fiiish1987
They very well could be doing legal stuff... but i doubt it. If you went out shooting at night, got cold and stiff, by the time you get home all you wanna do is get washed and go to bed. the car can wait till morning. yet these guys allways wash them immediatly in the dark ( well not quite they allways use these little torches with blue light(possibly halogens or something).) i have no intention of approaching them. i was thinking more along the lines of keeping a log. i'd like to take some photographs but my camera has low zoom and just cant handle taking photos at night! How often does this happen a week? theres activity most nights during the week. i'm not sure about weekends as i'm normally socialising down the pub
NorfolkBoy
Don't the Special Boat Service operate out of Dorset?* In all seriousness I'd give 'em a wide berth..... *Getting my coat now......

al4x
Best to keep out of it, though sounds like curiosity is getting the better of you If they're in cammo its more likely to be poaching and if the vehicles are getting muddied they could be running dogs but its not likely with a bull mastif. That does sound more like badgers but its a bit excessive every night. Do they do it all year round as thats even more odd.
fiiish1987
Its more often in the winter. they've quietened down at the mo but still tinker with the bikes and 4x4's. i'm off now finish work early on fridays!
Axe
You have your angle to report them. There is a bureau for incosiderate behaviour, I cant remember the name exactly. However, it operates during the weekdays and to ensure that things like this (noise nuiscance) does not have to be put up with. I had a case recently where a neighbour was quite blatent playing music till 4am in the morning every night. We complained to the police who put us on to the relevant department. It was sorted out very quickly.
Cranfield
They could be off roader/quad enthusiasts, that are going out after dark on unauthorised land. There have been complaints around Chartham and Chilham in Kent, of quad riders going around private woodland tracks during the night. They cut locked chains on the gates and generally cause a noise nuisance. The Police sometimes attend, but they have almost no chance of catching them in the woods, so they have to try to ambush them on their way home, with muddy vehicles and quad bikes. All the time there are very few official public places to take quadbikes and offroad vehicles, this sort of thing will happen.

What do i do about it?/ who do i speak to about it? Ask if you can join them. I heard its pretty lucrative business drug running. The pays good, the hours are short and you get m ost weekends off down the pub socialising Jonno
Quist
Just to point out that if you get involved in a dispute with your neighbours, you have to declare it when you sell your property. Unsurprisingly, this will reduce its value considerably in the eyes of potential buyers. If you think theyre up to something criminal, an anonymous note to the police with registrtation numbers might be a better route. They might be legitimate stalkers or fox lampers. The police will know if there are any FAC's registered at the premises. Yep, I sneak my bag and guns in and out in the dark becuase my neighbours might comment unfavourably and throw hissy fits about there being guns around. Baldrick
Sounds suspicious. Get the Police involved. Don't let them fob you off - keep reporting the neighbours and the cops will look into it. On the noise front, from current personal experience, get the local Council involved. Most Councils have a dedicated noise monitoring sub-division of their Environmental Services dept. They are there to be summoned in the small hours, and can serve a Noise Abatement Order (through the Courts) which results in all noise-causing equipment being confiscated. Basically, report everything. Keep a diary of events, and qualify the noise and interruptions (e.g so loud I couldn't hear the television/it made the windows rattle). Take photos. fulltimeshooter
Really tho it sounds quite intresting, prehaps they are poaching but in all fairness they might be totally legal (doubt it tho!) Or the other option is they might be obsesive compolsive LOL washing 4x4s ect ect P.s i wouldnt get involved just keep an eye out!
