huntsman
I was running on empty earlier today, the fuel light came on and the petrol station was about 3 miles way, still had plenty left in in for another 30 miles. As I approached the garage I noticed a massive queue on the approach, not normally this busy,As it transpires the news on the radio had been blurting out Drivers may find themselves without fuel - with petrol pumps across the country running dry - after fuel drivers voted in favour of strikes today. bedwards1966
I haven't been out past any fuel stations yet, but I'm not surprised to hear the panic's starting. I think it's all a bit funny really, I don't think there will be any difficulty in obtaining fuel if it all goes ahead, as the government will be getting the army in as they don't want to lose the tax revenue and have a repeat of what happened in 2000. A lot of money at stake for them. I expect that if it comes to the army helping that we'll see a nice increase in the fuel prices to 'cover the cost' of 'ensuring we don't have to do without fuel'. The media are just making a fuss about nothing I think, they like to do that!
Thunderbird
Typical isn't it? Last week the headline was 'fuel price tips £1.40 a litre...' This week, 'panic buying at the pumps.'

shaun4860
Aye, but shelf stackers at tesco's ain't on £45k. no, very true mark, it was the "anyone could do it" way it came across dont get me wrong, i dont think striking achieves anything, you never get the money back that you lose. If it was a blockade over fuel prices then i think they would have a lot of support.

andypaint
I heard today that most of the tanker drivers are on £45k a year, inc private health care and low working hours, due to the nature of the job. And they still have the cheek to strike, there's a lot of people out there who take that job.

Sick of this rip off (by UK government that is) just wish poeple would wise up to the fact that the price fo fuel here in blighty is mainly duty and vat (to make matters worse they apply vat to the price that already includes a very high level of duty)
stoggieman
Should we look a little closer to what is going on? I have been a member of a trade union just about all my working life with the exeption of my service in the RAF then the ARMY. Upon leaving the services I was a local gov officer for 19 years The first thing I did was to join Nalgo. I feel that if every working person was a member of a union the country would be in a better state than it is at the moment. I do not agree with the army being used in this way. It is the perogative of every working person to down tools if they have a problem that the bosses do not want to listern to it is the job of the unions to represent their members to see fair play. I do not reccolect the forces being used during the miners strike. But in this situation the amount of revenue that the country will loose in unjust taxation on the cost of fuel is the problem. If every person who has to put fuel in their car to get to work said we have had enough and no one bought fuel for a couple of days we would see the cost of fuel drop considerably
ME
there's a lot of people out there who take that job. I wouldn't. I don't like Yorkies, blocking dual carriageways by overtaking for miles at 56 mph or the smell of petrol.

Secondly i think the unions create some of the problems of strikes in the first place by instigating a strike to get what they want rather than just get on with the job they are paid to do

Livefast123
This is why the government can take us for mugs in this country, nobody will ever stand together and strike united bringing the country to a halt, they would prefer to biatch about the strike and watch others take action. (given that the strike is not about prices) While I am not in favour of strikes, it's getting to the point that something has to be done. WelshLamb
I think all lorries should park up for a fornight, and watch this whole country fall to its knees when theres no fuel at the pumps or food on the shelves
